I'm sure this is a beginner's question, but since I've never drank it much before I've never bothered to learn.....whats the deal with diet soda? I've found that drinking a bunch of diet soda helps satisfy cravings for something sweet late at night. Zero calories = zero calories, so it can't really be hurting my weight loss goals. But I still feel "unhealthy" drinking 1/2 a 2 liter of something whose ingredients list contains a bunch of chemicals and random crap I've never heard of.

Maybe it is psychological, but I find that when I drink diet soda (compared to regular) the carbonation hits me harder, meaning bloating/gas/heartburn. I wouldn't worry about the artificial sweetener or other chemicals. They put that stuff in everything we eat/drink anyways, so worrying about it in one thing is kind of pointless.

Context/dosage.

Would you drink water/tea otherwise? Would you drink gasoline/soda/rat poison?

I posted a prior thread where I'd 100% consume a giant ass soda if given the choice between that and water.

drinking diet soda does indeed mean I'll drink a glass or two less of water, but I already drink more water than anyone I've ever met(not exaggerating one bit)...I literally have to pee 2 or 3 times every single time I'm in the gym because I'm drinking so much water.

I'd just get over this psychological impasse. Next up you're going to start having protected sex if you keep up with this line of thought.

I teared up a little. That was really sweet.

I've satisfied cravings for sweetswith diet soda before, just be careful, it can get out of hand.

Never had problems with the carbonation though.

studies show that people who drink a lot of diet soda tend to get fatter, and apparently it still causes insulin spikes despite not having sugar. and obviously all those chemicals aren't good for you.

having said that i drink a lot of diet soda.

Ingestion of diet soda before a glucose load augments glucagon-like peptide-1 secretion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine the effect of artificial sweeteners on glucose, insulin, and glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 in humans.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: For this study, 22 healthy volunteers (mean age 18.5 +/- 4.2 years) underwent two 75-g oral glucose tolerance tests with frequent measurements of glucose, insulin, and GLP-1 for 180 min. Subjects drank 240 ml of diet soda or carbonated water, in randomized order, 10 min prior to the glucose load.

RESULTS: Glucose excursions were similar after ingestion of carbonated water and diet soda. Serum insulin levels tended to be higher after diet soda, without statistical significance. GLP-1 peak and area under the curve (AUC) were significantly higher with diet soda (AUC 24.0 +/- 15.2 pmol/l per 180 min) versus carbonated water (AUC 16.2 +/- 9.0 pmol/l per 180 min; P = 0.003).

CONCLUSIONS: Artificial sweeteners synergize with glucose to enhance GLP-1 release in humans. This increase in GLP-1 secretion may be mediated via stimulation of sweet-taste receptors on L-cells by artificial sweetener.

GLP-1 is a peptide hormone which does a lot of things, with the main one being promoting insulin secretion from beta cells, yet insulin levels were not "significantly" higher, so probably not a big deal either way.

two world records in one week = not a problem

Squatting 375 is easy

2x bodyweight is well within sight. I'm thinking it'll most likely occur around 195 bodyweight/390 squat. I weighed 202 today with shoes, shirt, shorts, socks, and long hair that I haven't had cut in over a month.

gonna try 380 on Monday to make it a nice 3 world records in 8 days

Tough workout today....

Speed squats:

warmups
1x3x275
1x3x295
1x3x315
10x3x245(did these in 9 minutes and 57 seconds, basically just took 45 seconds of rest in between each set)

Dips
1x36xbodyweight

Power Clean Drills

Power Cleans: Still don't want to go all out until I get form down, so just messed around with 1x3x95, 1x3x115, and 1x3x135

Doesn't seem like a ton of work now that I'm writing it down, but the 10 squat sets in 10 minutes were pretty killer, and the dips were my max effort and quite tiring.

36 dips in one set? That's sick.

45 seconds between sets makes lifting way harder.

Yeah my chest strength plus now lower bodyweight probably make dips one of my best exercises. I actually specifically went for 36 because I thought that would make me #1 on the whiteboard, but it only makes me #2. I don't think I could've gotten many more...42 seems out of reach imo.
