Good call.

FWIW I agree with you. Gus>>Glover.

That must've been what it was like when Forrest/Bonnar fought that first time. Best back and forth battle in so long.

am i being overly dramatic if i say that could easily be FOTY if you factor in the stakes?

Lol Dana talking about LHW record.

FOTY so far for me although i've probably only watched like 75% of UFC cards and virtually no smaller promotions
09-22-2013 , 01:45 AM
Yeah, this was easily fight of the year for me. Better than the Rua/Henderson fight from 2012 imo, which was overrated because both fighters gassed after the first round and took turns almost dying of lethargy.

Also, does Khabib actually know English? After the fight he had that one phrase in pretty coherent English, and has since spoken almost all Russian. Seems odd

Yeah I think this is what made it even more special than fights like that one.

The fact that they didnt actually gas and kept it competitive for 5 rounds was insane. Gus gassed a little at the end but thats more about the punishment i think.

The only reason it was a truly great fight (edit: as opposed to simply 'excellent'} was the 'holy **** JON JONES MIGHT LOSE' vibe.

that and the fact it was superclose nonstop action.

The only fights I've seen that are contenders weren't title fights. That alone makes it better. So much more on the line.

That was awesome.

Yeah, it was real competitive but there was only one minute when either guy was hurt and it wasn't like they just sat in the pocket trading bombs. Compare it to Hendo - Rua or Bradley - Provodnikov ... but I'm gonna STFU since it really was a thoroughly good fight that in thoroughly enjoyed.

Now that's the way to end a presser. Mock Ariel.

Alex is going to the hospital too, but he is changed + walking around with a Swedish scarf around his neck. Walking around with his head high

Jones is going to the hospital. He was just taken out on a stretcher, eyes closed.
Hopefully nothing serious for Jones.

probably something wrong with a leg he was limping pretty badly

i mean this one went basically as well as he could have hoped for the vast majority of it, if he recovers better in between 4th and 5th he probably wins a split decision. you can't point to anything else that he could realistically do differently and hope to win.
I'd rather say that if he doesn't get tagged by that elbow, he wins. To me, what you're saying is he should just acquire an unattainable level of cardio. Off the top off my head I can't recall anyone at LHW fighting at that pace and still looking like he had gas left in his tank until he got rocked.

I don't know how you not only say that's his main area of improvement, but the ONLY thing he can do differently for the next fight. There are a ton of tools he can add to his stand-up game, more diversity, better kicks, more use of elbows etc. There's a lot of room for improvement in both his stand-up and ground game.

I also doubt he will be hit with as many high kicks next fight.

I think this fight will make Alex one of the more popular athletes in Sweden with a substantial pay increase as a result.

Where do we want them to go from here? I'm definitely against an immediate rematch unless it would be something like a TUF season (which is not happening obviously).
Jones should fight Glover, he will easily beat him. To me he's kind of overrated.
Alex should fight ?
Alex probably won't get much recognition. If he got celebrated in the media like he deserves (which he wont) that might help, but ultimately very few Swedes watch his fights. I will go to work on Monday and no one will talk about the fight. Hopefully that'll change in the future.

I agree about the rematch. I'm not a fan of rematches unless it's a ridiculous decision (but this was correct) or in special circumstances like with Anderson and Weidman.

Alex vs Davis is a fight that would make sense and they are prepared to fight again, but I doubt the UFC will make that fight happen unless it's for the title and I don't think they should.

Yeah, that's another adjustment to make.

vs. Hendo/Belfort winner. Kind of pointless though?

vs. Nogueira. Should have happened a long time ago.

vs. Mousasi? Is Mousasi ranked high enough? Would be a fun fight for sure if Mousasi is not moving to 185 like he should.

Machida is a dreamfight, but he's going 185.
Yeah, there are a lot of good match-ups that aren't against Davis or an immediate rematch..

Any news on Cormier btw? If he's moving to LHW that'll stir things up nicely.
09-22-2013 , 02:50 AM
I guess we'll have to wait and see until after he beats Roy Nelson. If he does not move down after all this talk i will be let down.

Maybe they will need to do an immediate rematch because who will keep Alex occupied for TWO fights if Jones is to fight Glover AND Cormier?

hmm.. i actually prefer that scenario. That will let both fighters (and they are yet to hit their prime being only 26) improve and they could build the rematch into a big ppv.
If so i hope Gus gets 1 "easy" fight to rebuild and then one title shot eliminator.

Probably against someone like Mousasi/Nogueira first and then maybe Davis for the shot if Davis wins his next fight.

(Cormier may very well beat Jones though)

just realized in what area Gus is much better than jones...

The footwork. For someone as talented as Jones is, his footwork sucks.

Gus has amazing footwork for a 205er.
09-22-2013 , 02:58 AM
Gus is the huge Dom Cruz.
