id like someone more knowledgeable than me to explain how Jones could have possibly gotten either the 1st or 2nd round. you say he might have stolen rd 2, from my untrained eye it looked like easy 10s for gustaffson in both rd 1 and rd 2.

RE: The elbows

It was also working for him through the entirety of the fight.

Really surprised by Gus's power. Jones took it, but Gus was loading up pretty good.

The random part about it was not that it was thrown but that it landed like it did. Gus moved and ducked into it.

Jon did make himself a pile of dough tonight though. Next fights gonna bring the crowds.

I don't think his cardio was a problem. Part of why he gassed was getting tagged in the end of 4th, part because the fight had a crazy pace.

This is why we need the fightmetrics to sort some of this out. I already gave my opinion on what they contain.

Bloody Elbow & MMA Junkie both scored it 49-46, Sherdog had it 48-47, 48-47, 49-46. All 5 judges scored 1 for Gustafsson and 2, 4 & 5 for Jones.

i mean the biggest strikes of the fights were like 8 headkicks by jones that couldve dazed him every time.
09-22-2013 , 12:51 AM
Yeah Jones looked way more tired than Gus in the 4th. Getting rocked like that and recovering can't be easy in between the 4th and 5th round in such an active fight.

The thing to take away from this is how easily Gustafsson stuffed the takedown attempts, something that was thought of as almost impossible.

I think both fighter will gain a lot from this and will just easily dominate the division whoever is #1 and #2.

Sick fight. I'd rate it over Chael vs. Anderson. This was a much "better fight" and the chock factor was almost the same.
09-22-2013 , 12:53 AM
wish there was a way to show a quick replay or something on round 2, it felt like Gustaffson landed more significant strikes but Jones had that 1 head kick
09-22-2013 , 12:53 AM
mmajunkie had it 49-46 jones, buncha thieves!

Anyways, for once im stoked about a rematch! Do it Dana!

will watch the post fight conference.

I mean, you could say that Gus' BIG LEAK is he doesn't have Godly cardio and ability to recover from getting tagged. It would be a dumb argument, but you can make it.

Maybe he threw it deliberately into that spot knowing Gus would move into it?

Can't take away anything from that move imo.

and a large majority of the media had it 48-47. BJPenn.com even had it for Gus.
Scoring it 49-46 is sloppy at best, lets move on?

yup, maybe.

Rematch should be huge.
Alex probably outperformed even his biggest fans wildest expectations. It's one thing to almost get an armbar (like Belfort) a completely other thing to have 5 extremely competitive rounds.
I think this fight will make Alex one of the more popular athletes in Sweden with a substantial pay increase as a result.

Where do we want them to go from here? I'm definitely against an immediate rematch unless it would be something like a TUF season (which is not happening obviously).
Jones should fight Glover, he will easily beat him. To me he's kind of overrated.
Alex should fight ?

Anyone's got a link to the press conference?
09-22-2013 , 12:58 AM
Alex was avoiding those elbows really well for most of the fight. I think cardio may have played a role when he got caught in the 4th. He was holding up reasonably well in the 5th though, considering how the 4th ended.

Jones legs were done after the fight btw, he was limping out *really* bad.

I was way too invested in the fight to score it properly, but I'd say 48-47 sounds right. I'd disagree with 49-46 but it's not the worst scoring I've seen.

Edit: Thanks plex!

Glover looks like a walking turd compared to Alex now.

so he should have planned to go through the entire fight with a top 5 p4p champ without getting tagged?

jones got hit a lot more than gus and recovered pretty well in the later rounds. you could argue that jones took the majority of his punishment earlier, when he was presumably fresher, but both guys got hit a lot.
