Dave Meltzer says UFC 184 did 500 to 600 k sales. If true, wow.
03-05-2015 , 04:15 PM
Wonder how many people bought it when Weidman was fighting and never cancelled lol
03-05-2015 , 07:22 PM
Who buys a PPV a month in advance? Can't be many. Those numbers are amazing for that card.
03-05-2015 , 07:27 PM
That can't be real unless ufc bought 500k themselves
03-05-2015 , 07:32 PM
You guys are forgetting about Koscheck v Ellenberger here!!
03-05-2015 , 07:32 PM
If those numbers are real then Ronda v. Cyborg would do ~1mm.

I see a lot of really bad logic, analogies, and sexism itt in reference to Ronda and the women's 135 division.

Comparing Ronda's domination of her division to men's divisions isn't really fair. The problem is most women are still on a semi pro level up until they fight Ronda(or maybe Misha). They don't have the money, training, time, or experience to actually be professional fighters. In the mens division there is no way to get a title fight as a semi pro. John Jones would smash semi pro fighters with as little training and experience as Ronda's opponents just as fast as Ronda.

The closest men's division you can compare is 125 or heavy weight where the talent pool is the most shallow but you still won't see as many inexperienced fighters getting title shots.

Alexis Davis made 15&15 the fight before Ronda and she is one of the more experienced fighters in the division.

To me it seems like what you just posted is the general opinion around here.

I was saying boooruns....

After her fight Ronda got talked about more in the mainstream media than maybe any MMA fighter ever has. I hate her, but she's huge draw now with the casuals.

I wonder if Ronda had stayed the co-main, how much better would the PPVs of been? If at all.

lots more fosho

poor Weidman.

Guy had the potential to be regarded as the GOAT and if this crap continues he'll just be a flash in the pan and in 10 years people will think he fluked 2 wins off the GOAT

The Chris will be going down as top 5 goat for sure.

He clears out MW, that'd be maybe the nastiest murderers row ever.

Is she though? Like do people outside MMA actually care about her? Anecdotally, I don't see any social media interest in her, compared to somebody like McGregor.
03-06-2015 , 03:50 AM
I'd say she is. I have so many friends most of whom I didn't know were MMA fans, that got on board because of her. A lot of them are girls, but not all.
03-06-2015 , 04:13 AM
I guess she's in the Entourage movie, so thats something...

She has access to mainstream media outlets no other MMA fighter has. She's on Conan and Kimmel, in ESPN's body issue and SI's swimsuit issue. No one can compare to her exposure.

After last weekend's fight people mentioned her in other parts of this forum I frequent where I've never seen MMA talked about before (at least since Lesnar). On MMA Beat Jeff Wagenheim said that the only fighter other journalists on SI asks him about is Rousey. On The MMA Hour Brian Stann said that when Rousey fights she gets more attention at his office than anyone else.

If that terrible card really did 500-600k buys there's no denying Rousey really is a big star and PPV draw, at least by MMA standards. And most of that probably comes from attracting casuals.

I find even looking at Ronda nauseating but there's no arguing with the following.

At least Mama Rowdy understands reality......

One person who isn’t excited to see Rousey fight a man? Her mom.

"Seriously, that's a stupid idea,” Rousey’s mother, AnnMaria De Mars, a former world judo champion, said of the idea. “I'm as much a feminist as anyone but the fact is that biologically, there's a difference between men and women. Hello. Duh. A woman who is 135 pounds and a man who is 135 pounds are not physically equal."

Exposure i cant really argue with, its just tough to believe that that translates to PPV buys. Most people here i dont think would pay $60 (and for this event, exclusively) to watch Ronda fight, hard to think people only tangentially interested in her would then do it (maybe ignorance is bliss?).
