What's the very first game you've actually bought yourself?

Mine was Centurion: Defender of Rome.

Loved the game, too. Conquered all of the mainland multiple times. Only then figured out that you can actually put troops onto boats and finally conquered Sardinia, Corsica and the British Isles. Fun times.

The first time I actually remember buying a game and not having my parents buy it is when me and my brother pooled our money to buy an N64 and we got Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64 ldo.

Mine comes with an embarrassing story! I was 10 years old and my mum some how got me to do modeling for a Target magazine which they then turned into posters and billboards etc. It was pretty embarrassing but I ended up getting paid $700. The SNES came out a week later and I bought that with Final Fight. I can't remember how much the console was but FF was $120. Not as bad as SF2 which was $150 when it was released here.

My first video game purchases are pretty unmemorable experiences. I had to buy most of my own games outside of xmas/bday presents from an early age with flyer delivery money so there was a lot of bargain bin shopping and not a lot of AAA titles.

I think my first buy was Little League Baseball (NES) but it's hard to remember exactly. I am actually pretty sure I bought an Atari game with allowance money before that at some point but couldn't tell you what it was.

I didn't get into PC till I was in early teens. I think Kings Quest VI was my first buy after we got our first computer.

I recently moved and haven't set up my computer yet so I have been visiting the backlog on my PS3. What was previously only used for Netflix and HBO GO is for games once again! I have been subscribed to PSN for a while so I've got lots of their free games downloaded.

I played about 20 minutes of ICO and really enjoyed it. I couldn't see that there was any save feature so I exited to the menu screen and lost all my progress. It would only be 20 minutes of playing to get back to where I was (probably less now that I know what the buttons do) but that's the type of thing that turns me off to a game. Is there some point where you get to save your game? I basically went outside for the first time after getting the chick out of the cage then quit to the main screen.

I like the concept of the game. It throws you in and doesn't really tell you anything about what you're supposed to be doing or what your control scheme is. It's pretty simple and I think there's a lot of potential for fun puzzles there. Someone please tell me I'm missing something big and that there is a way to save your progress.

The other game I've been playing is Chrono Trigger. I love RPG's and this one is a lot of fun so far. I've heard nothing but good things about it so I figured I would do myself a favor and experience it. I have to say that certain parts of the game are fairly linear, but outside the "dungeon" type areas it doesn't give you very much direction as to what you're supposed to be doing or where you're supposed to go. It feels like a throwback to a time when games didn't hold your hand as much or point you exactly in the direction it wants you to go. It's almost refreshing. However, at the same time I don't think I have the patience to spend an hour talking to everyone in each town and figuring out that someone's "clue" means that I'm supposed to go to the other side of the world in X time period. I'm saddened a bit that I resort to a walkthrough to speed that part up but after all I'm a busy man with places to go and Netflix series to watch.

I really enjoy the battle system in Chrono Trigger so far. I'm about 5 hours in and just met the monkey lady. The tech and combo system is fun - it's something I haven't seen in a JRPG like that before.

No idea what my first video game purchase was but it was undoubtedly a N64 game. With the NES I only had the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt bundle and rented any other games I wanted to play. With the SNES I relied on Birthday/Christmas gifts and trading with friends.

Pokemon Red. Still love that game, replay it every 4-5 years for the past 20 years or so.

Aceium, hold out for Chrono Trigger spoiler free! It's so awesome when you discover the effects you're having on the future when you do stuff in the past. One of the best games ever made, give it the full experience.

My first clear memory of getting a game just for me was LttP for my like 10th birthday. We still have it on video, my oldest brother got it for me and had put it inside a huge packing box, with about fifteen more intermediary boxes and layers of newspaper wrapping covered in packing tape. By the time I got to the last one and pulled out that gold and black box I was freaking out :P The first Zelda had been my first real gaming experience with that oldest brother, staying up until 3-4 am as a five year old while he watched me bomb and burn my way through Hyrule, so that's pretty neat.

The first one I remember buying with my own money that I earned (non gift/allowance) was Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, probably why it's still in my top 5 all time.

Chrono Trigger is amazing; there's some backtracking but I don't remember it being too confusing to find your way. Beaten it several times but pretty sure I've only gotten one or two endings and not all of the characters

First game purchase was when I was 6 and my brother, 8, pooled our birthday + pocket money together to buy a second hand Sega Mega Drive with Sonic 1 & 2, Streets of Rage and a few other games.

Other good memories of buying games include spending weeks trying to convince my parents to let me buy Perfect Dark when I was 10. In one of our magazines at the time it had been given a score of 101/100 and I just had to get it.

First game purchase was huge for me, was a PC game called "One Must Fall" from the DOS gaming era. It was like mortal kombat with giant robots and tons of customization. There used to be loads of awesome demo discs for PC and I played the demo for it over and over and over. Saved up $60 from mowing (took all summer) and I had to order it over the phone of all things.

Played that game into the ****ing ground, worth every pebble that would fling into my face while mowing church lawns.

Edit:
