while in some cases this may be true, i'd think that with it being a different format it may have slightly different timings which could throw the runner off (while not japanese obv see TMR resetting battletoads). and in some cases it's required, vice city for example needs you to use a different language for at least part of the run to exploit glitches

I think the vast majority of viewers envision the event as if they're inviting a friend over to casually watch them play a game they're great at.

How many people want the speedrunners to skip through dialogs for games they've never played before? How much better would it be if they showed it even for a second?

I kinda wish runners could make this happen at AGDQ (skip through, very long)

I think there's a gigantic niche that's not being filled. If a speedrunner got into this i think they might get a huge following, if they could find some way/reason to beat their previous runs (maybe game pauses when talking at certain intervals?)

Btw i think this is why the Marios/Zeldas are so popular and why they're perennial favorites: They're light on story, or the story is mostly explained through the actions.

They also just lend themselves to being the best speedrunning games.

Platformers/Adventure games are the best games to watch someone speedrun because the technicality is easily explained with what you see on the screen. Someone talking about RNG or cutscene manipulation is way less interesting than seeing if someone can make the triple jump or if they're going to bonk it.

That in addition to it being an iconic game that I'm sure 99.99% of the audience has played before is why SM64 is the most popular game to watch. The 120 star run has very few glitches (BLJ to clip in a couple of spots on Hazy Maze Cave really being one of the only ones I can think of), so it's just a 100 minute run of pure execution that is simple to follow while you watch.

Like even look at a game like Dark Souls, to speedrun that is basically to know the proper routing, how to abuse the game to maximize damage, how to avoid enemies, how to clip through the wall and reset the console at the right time, and how to beat a few bosses. It is a very popular and difficult game, but it just doesn't set up for speedrunning nearly as well as a lot of the older games.

On the whole fewer new games thing, I think part of that is the increase in popularity with the Xbox 360/PS3 generation of FPS and sports games, which aren't popular games in speedrunning.

The Mario Galaxy games are inventive and cool platformers, but are less fun to watch speedrun because of the lack of the open world atmosphere both "in" and "out" of the levels.

I think that would be really annoying. I know you were just using it as an example but it would be a terrible move to have a game as new as Fallout 4 as well. People who haven't played it will just insta bail because they don't want to be spoiled.

I want to watch people destroy games, not cutscenes. I'd love to see more skill displays like tetris, shmups or other obscure games. Instead of the awkward interviews while they set up they could just have some freak playing hyper hexagonest for 5 mins or have some guy beat Hibachi for example. There are tons of little things like this that would be cool to watch.

Just saying if i could only show a person a single OoT run, i'd rather it be 100% (few hours long) than any% (18 minutes)

To be fair they did have a 4 player co op Majoras Mask 100% run which was pretty awesome. No casual viewer would sit through over 5 hours of gameplay though.

Sometimes i wonder if this is true, and not just something we as gamers have been telling ourselves for far too long

Heh I'm actually about 1/2 way through it, been watching 15-20 minute chunks when I've had time. Pretty entertaining run so far imo, even if there are a bit too many glitches for my taste (they clip out of bounds a few times - though not nearly as often as the LTTP run, and they frequently use this trick with bombs to hover to hard-to-reach places). A lot of the optimizations are impressive - they blast through the spider houses really quickly without any glitches, for instance.

This is a funny depiction of the bomb trick:

Don't most of the longer runs end up just using the same tricks/glitches over and over again for hours? I've never watched a 100% OoT run because I feel like that's what it's going to be, and to me that's boring.

Personally, I would never watch a multiple-hour-long speed run of a game that I'm not familiar with. And even games that I am familiar with, I much prefer shorter runs. Honestly though, I have a hard time even watching any speed run of a game I'm not at least a little familiar with. It's a lot less interesting to me if I don't understand at least a little bit what's going on, in a way that commentary doesn't really make up for.

I also tend to prefer some of the glitchier runs though, which I guess might be a bit of an unpopular opinion? Not completely sure on what the consensus is there, but it at least seems like the more vocal crowd is glitchless. So I guess I may be a bit biased, since typically more glitches = significantly shorter.

This is kinda the point ive been going for in my rambling.

Maybe the solution is speedrunners need to explain what's going on for AGDQ type events

Think it's close to impossible to be further from the truth than this.

Then could you explain what makes that statement so wrong? Because I honestly don't know. Whenever I hop in in the middle of a 100% run for a few minutes, all I see is more of the same: ISG, megaflips, superslides, clipping, pause buffering, wrong warps, etc. The same things you see in the shorter runs. And that just gets boring to me after an hour or so.

I think you're underestimating how popular the Let's Play is.

Can I present a ~50 min. speedrun for the panel so we can all figure out what you each want to see out of it? This is a favorite run for me because the runner is entertaining, the game is entertaining, and it's not dominated by glitches (going out of bounds type stuff) as much as it's dominated by exploits in the AI, which to me feels like a more 'pure' gameplay experience.

see how much more entertaining that is when he explains what's happening over someone who isnt?
