I'm still deliberating on whether or not to purchase minecraft, and I'm really in two minds right now. Basically I'm not particularly in to being creative and making my own world and I don't really find much fun in building things that are of little use ( e.g beautiful houses ). What I really like is a goal/aim challenge that I can do, now I think in the main quest there is like a pseudo goal to reach/kill an ender dragon or something, is that something that alone would be worth purchasing the game for? I do think the collecting/survival part of the game would be quite fun, and I do have the ability to no life and whore out materials

Finally, I have seen numerous challenge map play throughs (e.g skyblock, melon survival) etc, and I think these would be really good for me as they have a clear objective and would test how good I am at the game, are these maps easily accessible and plentiful?

Sorry I'm a noob, but thanks to anybody who takes the time to read this and helps out

Don't think and ponder so much and just buy it instead

It doesn't really matter what you like or don't like in other games - minecraft is not like any other game that came before it. I'm not saying you'll love it regardless, but I don't think whether or not you do is going to be dependant on what you usually look for in a game.

But yes, there are a ton of challenge maps and they're free and easy to get and use. The mincraft community is one of the biggest and most creative of any game ever, so there are a ton of maps and challenges.

That sounds like good advice, to be honest I didn't need much convincing and I do think I'm going to get it.

Unfortunately this sounds like bad news for my poker volume

Like you, I have no desire to spend a lot of time building a pretty house or a village or whatever. But minecraft has a lot of functional things that you can tinker with and that I found to be very satisfying.

Then when you get bored of the basic game you download http://www.technicpack.net/ and your head will explode with all the possibilities.

Any chance the server's going to get restarted anytime soon? I always hate trying to find cool mountains that aren't taken to build on...

You have an infinite world and you are too lazy to find a mountain?

I got back in 2 days ago and it took me 5 minutes to find the most awesome mountain ever... Just run around, you don't even have to worry about night time. /time day and /SetWarp and you can wander around the entire world.

there's a world border if you travel 2000 blocks from 0,0 in any direction.

ComputerCraft mod, sick stuff. I could totally waste another month screwing with this. Please nobody install it on a server.

People have already written tons of great stuff too - one of the coolest I saw was a bot that tore down a structure to reverse engineer it and learn how to build it. Plenty of automatic tunnel builders, wandering guard routines with A* pathfinding, etc etc.

One guy built a web framework for the in-game computers. Complete with a search engine API so that you could search for other people's in-game websites.

After reading this thread off and on for maybe a year or so, I decided to pick up minecraft pocket edition. I'm hoping it hooks me enough to get the real game. Has anyone itt played pocket edition? Should I just have got it for pc?

To me, the pocket edition seems kind of like a novelty for people who are already hooked on the PC version. I can't say that objectively, though, since I played the PC version first.

It seems to have come a long way since I played it, though.
