I had no problems with GTA 4 on PC although I did hear it was pretty horrific at launch. When was the last time you tried it because they might have patched it up or something. I bought it on 360 originally and didnt get it on PC until a couple years later. I love it on PC because I've modded the crap out of it.

From Dust is easily the worst console port I've ever played followed closely by Darksiders.

I bought it a month or so ago when Steam had it on sale for like 5 bucks. The game just doesn't feel smooth at all, though I wouldn't call it unplayable or anything. Just some random stuttering here and there which annoys me too much to enjoy the game, but I am a little nitty when it comes to that kind of thing.

Don't Starve was bought on its own, and there was a GTA pack that included everything for ~13. (Grand Theft Auto Complete Pack
DAILY DEAL! Offer ends in 21:09:30)

Originally I also tried to buy 4 + liberty city stories, but I didn't realize they already came with the complete pack that's 75% off.

I can't even get From Dust to work on my PC.

6 days on my first Don't Starve attempt, and then

Spoiler:
some crazy ass dogs started chasing me right at sun down, and my torch ran out as I was running in circles to escape their bites. It finally went pitch black and I randomly died.

Presented with a main menu/retry screen after that, but nothing I did was doing anything. Is there some sort of leveling mechanism involved? I seemed to be near hitting the first level and getting some form of reward.

Stardrive came out a few days ago, but $27 is certainly higher than any game I have bought in recent memory. Anybody play it yet?

Yes. It sucks.

Maybe imdoingitwrong.jpeg but I tried firing up and installing a handful of indie games I've acquired through humble bundles, etc. as part of my backlog today, tried playing ~an hour of each but nothing really sunk in between Dungeons of Dredmor, Rochard or Avadon: The Black Fortress. Granted these aren't the top of the line indie titles but they're well reviewed. Didn't hook me though to get back into some gaming which I have been missing recently, so I decided to try one of my backlog AAA titles in Darksiders. Will give that a go this week, and in the meantime for quickplays I've installed Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and will probably get CS:GO soon.

dont starve is so addictive.

those damn tree bosses are so bugged. first play through i get 2 of them spawn around day 5 right next to my base.

2nd game i had to chop down a giant forest with the help of a pig posse and couldn't find any until i get to the last 10 trees and 3 of them spawn right away..

got a run through on day 7 and so far i've yet to find a single beefalo, and only one pig.

how does one lay wall type things, like straw walls?
(took me ages to figure out how to add wood/pinecones to fire pits)

It took me a while to come across any beefalo. They're usually kickin it in the grass lands/ plains. Look in the map and you should be able to find some pretty quick. As for grass walls, I'm not too sure but try right clicking where you want to set them. That's how I built stone walls I think.

I think they have like a 1% chance to spawn whenever you chop down a tree, sounds like you were pretty unlucky. I only ran into one the entire time on the 37 day run I just played.

37? Nice! How'd you survive winter?

Well the 2 most important factors you have to consider are starvation and freezing.

In order not to freeze, make sure you have warm clothing by day 20. Building the beefalo hat is probably the best for this but you have to kill one in order to get the horn needed for it. They aren't too difficult if you can manage to isolate one. Use the boomerang + bee mines/tooth traps and once they get in close finish it off with a spear (but make sure you have log armor equipped and ideally a football helmet as well).

If you can't manage to kill one by day 20 just get a razor. You can shave them while they sleep and harvest their wool to make the winter hat. (They look hilarious when they're shaved btw). Then you're going to need at least one heat stone (I'm not sure if the effect is increased if you have more than one in your inventory, I built two however). Lastly if you grow out Wilson's beard it will also help with the cold weather. Even with all of this you will still need to build fires frequently so make sure you are well stocked at all times.

Starvation - winter is pretty tough since food doesn't grow back. Foraged areas won't regenerate so you'll have to go further and further away (making you more susceptible to freezing). The way around this is to make your meals count. Build a drying rack and a crockpot, learn the recipes that fill you up the most and keep making them. The best reliable food source I have found is rabbits; make at least 2-3 traps and place them directly over the holes. Then when you come back in need of a meal there should be fresh meat. (4 meats in the crockpot gives you meat stew which fills you up completely btw).

A tent is also useful for the easy sanity boost and eliminating the long nights in the winter.

Other than that just be really careful. Don't bite off more than you can chew with tougher enemies (walruses especially are very difficult without a strategy) and pay close attention to the factors you have to juggle: starvation, cold, sanity, nighttime. Basically if you need to take care of more than one of these at one time you lose the game.

Yeah I'm pretty much addicted if you couldn't already tell

Damn, I have not even built 99% of the stuff you've listed off. I've got a lot of work to do. I need to sit down and grind out some of the Let's Play vids for this.

is there a goal in dont starve other than just surviving the longest possible?

Well the most important thing is to have fun. You can dick around and really do whatever you want and enjoy the game.

But if you want to survive for a long time I think the key is just to prioritize. Like for the first two days all I do is mine rocks so I never have to do it again.

Here's my best game so far:

I have no idea how I got all that **** done in 20 days. I almost don't want to play because it's perfect right now and I know I'm just going to do something stupid and die lol.

Sick base. It's really gonna suck when you do get killed but I'm sure you'll have fun in the meantime.

Also, does anyone think that a dedicated Don't Starve thread would be better than posting in here? I'd start one myself but I don't really have anything good to include in the op. Who knows, maybe it could turn out as big as the minecraft thread.

it seems like a really deep game. there's just a lot to tinker with and explore

i would rather be playing it right now than anything else, after 3 runs through

also, putting steam on Giz's laptop so she can try it out. Not really her type of game, but the quirky sense of humor, the graphics, and the music made her want to try it out.

it seems like it can really be a hard game. I'm quite interested in getting further. Good mix between gathering and building, punctuated by the occasional run for your life moments and slow, unsettling hang out in the dark and pray nothing finds you moments
