For me, I want poker to eliminate any stress over my financial well-being. Poker for me means not having to sweat buying a round of drinks for friends, or paying for a meal, or buying a few bottles/food for a party. I don't have lofty aspirations of buying cars/houses and whatnot from poker money.

I think if you set realistic goals, and if you really enjoy playing/talking about poker, that the motivation just comes. Sure some months (I'm looking at you December) I play less than I wanted to...but it's usually because I didn't value playing poker at the time. If poker isn't going to make you happier than the alternative activity you have for the night, don't play.

The whole point of poker as a 2nd income is to not make it seem like a job, it's a game that you can play, it's a serious thing...but it's not life or death if you miss a weekend going camping/on vacation.
I am right with you my RNG teammate...I dont want much from poker, just to be able to make my life a little less stressful. I just wanna be able to get a few cool things every once in a while...go out to eat and stuff like that. I do need to motivate myself tho...

I am playing really well right now and I am contemplating ending my session cause I am a little tired...and this is before work!

Also might want to check out the Psychology forum
Great link

I have a strong drive in poker...or whatever I do. I don't mind giving 10+ hours a day. I don't mind at all. In fact, I feel guilty when I don't work hard at poker. Really guilty. I must gogogogogo. I love the thrill of improving at something and working hard. Poker rewards you very directly here. Might take lil variance now and then but it's definitely worth my efforts.

A fun life is a life where you wake up in the morning and can't wait to begin your day... Not one where you make an excuse to lay in bed for 30 more minutes.

I much prefer to study/play poker than watch a boring movie or something.

When I was on vacation this december and didn't play poker for well over a week I felt guilty the whole way through that. As if I am not working at my goals and stuff.

You have to be driven. I agree with what McAvoy said.

I'm going to disagree with many in this thread; whether you enjoy it or not doesn't have to be a big part of the equation.

Think carefully about *why* you want to play. Try to nail it down really precisely. If, immediately after doing this, you're not keen to play, I reckon the reason isn't good enough. There are better things to do with your life. If you *do* want to play, then the reason's sound and you just need to remind yourself regularly. Write it down somewhere prominent.

This is sooooooooooooooooooo true...

Op if u really need motivation...think of something u really want but can't. Afford atm, then keep a picture or just remind urself of that...I work a ft job have a wife and kid, and I grind everyday, but I have supporting a family as motivation...

I don't really need any added motivation, taking people's money is all I need.

The other type of motivation is for non-essential things. E.g. secondary (poker) income. This type of motivation doesn't last. It might work for a while, but it doesn't last forever.
I disagree with this statement, I think when you find the right hobby/job for the right person and they have a good perspective it can last forever...or at least for years.

When you find the "right" (i.e. perfect) hobby/job, in my view, you love that hobby/job, and when you you love that hobby/job, it's not "motivation" that keeps you going at it. Instead, what keeps you going is the intrinsic reward of the hobby/job. Intrinsic reward = the benefit in and of itself.

Motivation is irrelevant when you love an activity (that you find intrinsically rewarding). Where motivation comes into play is when intrinsic reward is insufficient.

I play primarily for all the hot poker chick groupies.

I have a full time job, wife, and two dogs. We both have great careers, and if I didn't make a penny playing this year, we would be fine. I play b/c I love the game. I have always liked mentally challenging games like chess. Poker is just a hobby that has a potential financial upside. Last year, I made 1k online and 20k live. I was able to pay off a lot of debt, take vacations, give to charity, and buy a lot of things that would not have been possible without that extra money. Now, when I think of something extra that I want, for myself or someone else, I see either poker or working over time at work as the way to pay for it and poker seems a lot more appealing (and I live my real job).

I haven't read any replies in this thread yet but i just gotta ask, how much does your job pay per hour? If it's around minimum wage or like around $15 per hour, then you should maybe consider how much you enjoy your job. If you hate your job... then maybe you should focus on spending a lot of your free time learning poker, and learning how to multitable effectively like 9-12 tables. Obviously start small though.

I'm just saying this because if you can eventually get yourself to the point where you can play 12 or more tables of 25nl FR, you can likely make more than minimum wage just from rakeback if you managed to at least break even at the games... That is, if you put in roughly the same amount of hours into grinding poker as you would at a regular job. The key is treating it like a job. Just some food for thought. If you enjoy your job and would like to just make poker a hobby for extra income, then by all means just continue to do that. Either way I wish you luck with whatever you choose to do.

nvm what i said previously, i need to stop responding to threads when i just look at the title rather than actually take time to read the OP. Anyways, looks like you are comfortable with your current situation and already beat 25nl for a very nice wr. so imo, just keep doing what your doing. When it comes to motivating yourself to play more. I'm not very good at that because i tend to procrastinate putting in volume myself. But one suggestion i can give is try to create a very comfortable environment when you grind. Like, for me personally I grind while listening to calm music that helps me think and helps me put in long hours without much trouble, and I also have very comfortable chair. Basically, if you can feel like grinding is something enjoyable and not have it feel like a chore or work, then you will have a much easier time putting in the hours and hopefully you won't even have to try very hard to motivate yourself much.
