Can I call down profitably against an unknown here to showdown? I doubt he hits the Jx on the turn?

Nah, not calling 77 here. Doubt unknowns will barrel AK AQ ATs here enough for you to call down. Also, the 3rd diamond came off, easy fold imo

Yeah, folding. For the reasons NL Holland mentioned.

If I 3 bet this preflop then villain might fold and I would lose EV from all those times I hit a set vs pair.
I kind of like raising the flop (especially if there was a paired flop dynamic before), maybe if he has a better overpair villain will 3 bet and define his range a bit more?

after villain bets the turn my equity is much lower than on the flop vs say about a 30% preflop range so I only have 24% approximately and I need 30% to break even since he's offering me 2.333:1 odds with his bet sizing. I guess any 8 or higher on the turn really lowers my equity

why do you think villain is not barreling AK high? maybe the J is a good card to bet since it's not likely that I have it in my flatting range except JT, JK, AJ, which are 36 combos which may be lower due to the preflop bunching effect?

villain probably knows I have a pair when I call the turn so the river bet is probably a flush or overpair. people will bluff 3 streets out of position, I've done it before and gotten folds, but maybe the frequency is low
but if villain bets his entire preflop range of about 27% on the turn then I have much more equity

    thanks for the replies!
maybe I should have folded the turn since I don't have enough equity to call?
maybe raising a paired flop will be perceived as a bluff? I think you can raise these paired flops in position.
when he bets this size on the river it's really difficult for me to call with even Jx
I saw someone win a medium pot with 88 on a more risky board with overs so I was wondering under what circumstances can you do this
