Solsek, you're the guy I was looking for with that post. What brands of watch would you suggest? Just looking for a few names that I can browse around on.
03-31-2011 , 02:53 AM
And this is what I have right now so something that's got a different look to it.

I have a pair of adidas flip flops for when I'm just dickin around (my house is mainly tile so cold bare feet at night, etc)

Mainly (incl right now lol) I wear a pair of these by RocketDog. Pretty sure the company started out making shoes exclusively for chicks, but I like these.

Alot of my friends wear these (Wallabees). They look comfortable but I'm still undecided
03-31-2011 , 04:11 PM

03-31-2011 , 06:12 PM

03-31-2011 , 09:06 PM
I'm not a big fan of either of those

I can't really think of something to compare it to, but just think of buying a base 3 series for 250k. Might look good and be a step above typical Toyota and Honda, but with a hefty price that could allow you to buy something much better.

But yeah, if all you want is the looks, go for a fake and save yourself a couple of thousand dollars. You will have enough money to buy a lot of fakes.
As I started the watch conversation, this is where I thought it would go. Fakes. I mean, why would I spend $2000 on a ****ing watch when I can spend $10 on a watch? My phone keeps time. The thing is gonna be on my wrist and it's inevitable I'll bash it on something and scratch it unless I'm super careful. I don't want a month's salary sitting on my wrist, that's completely asinine. I'd rather spend that money on better food/entertainment/travel/alcohol/women.

Most girls couldn't identify a fake; I couldn't identify a fake. The sort of girl that can distinguish real from fake will never ever go for me anyway. What I was really hoping for in the discussion was:

Band: metal/leather, when, where, why? And what color? Black, brown, silver white? When, where, why?

Face: Big, small, square, round, when, where, why?

Blue slip ons are kinda effeminate iyam.

Honestly, those questions are more about style than anything. Since I am biased with watches it probably wouldn't be a good idea to ask me what looks good because the look of a watch is not super high on my list of priorities. I am sure this is not the case for many others ITT, so their advice would be more useful. But I will give you my opinions on the look of watches.

Band:
Metal (stainless steel) bands are usually more associated with sporty watches (such as divers watches). Leather bands are more usually associated with more formal/casual dressing. Stainless steel bands are also fine to use in more formal settings so if you must settle on one watch that would fit all your needs I would go with a stainless steel band. The downside of leather is that they are pretty hard to wear when doing activities that make you sweat. The leather on your skin may cause irritation and the leather will wear out faster. WRT to the color of leather bands I would go with brown if the dial of the watch is white, and black if anything else. No real explanation for this one...just personal style I guess.

Stainless steel on the other hand might be on the heavier side, but you will get used to it in a matter of days. They also tend to scratch pretty easy so there will be some maintenance required (once every 50-60 times you wear it depending on how careful you are).

There are also other options out there beyond SS/leather bands. Ballistic nylon (my favorite) and rubber are two other options that are great if you want to dress down a watch. They are pretty cheap ($10-20) a band and you can get them in lots of colors. I use a 300 SMP electric blue on a black nylon strap as my daily beater and I think it looks pretty nice. Since I'm in college people just think it's a cheap $50 watch so it really does a good job of hiding watch snobbery.

Dial:
This is going to be even more opinion/style based than watch bands. There are general "styles" that are associated with certain types of watches. For example, sportier watches usually have busier dials.
Speedmaster Professional

While dressier watches tend to have more simplistic design to them.

That's not to say sport watches can't be simple (the diver watch I wear is actually pretty simple--George Clooney wears the sample model SMP that I have, except in black for many of his red carpet appearances) and dressy watches can't be busy, but this will be the case for most watches you will probably come across. Whether the watch is white or black or silver or poopy brown probably depends more on the wearer than anything. I'm sure some people here could give recommendations as to what goes great together.

One thing I will say is that I think that round dials with cases between 40-42mm is the most basic shape of a watch you can get. You can go with larger case sizes and square shapes but some people who have them tend to do a poor job of "pulling the look off". It just looks goofy on some people imo. Watches any larger than 42mm really looks too big for anyone...

Check out watches made by:
IWC (Portuguese line, Aquatimer line) ----> favorite among poker players

Jaeger LeCoultre (High end, very respected watch company)

Omega (Mid-range, $2k-$4k). Known for the Speedmaster (posted above), which was the first watch on the moon. Also known for the "Bond watch"...the watch Pierce Brosnan used in his James Bond movies (and continues to be used by Daniel Craig).

Panerai - Would never wear this watch, but it seems to be a favorite among some poker players. These watches are pretty large, but they are pretty cool looking if they didn't have the stigma that douchebags wore them.

Seiko/Citizen - Very common in the US. They make pretty good watches. Don't discount these just because they are very common.

There are tons of other brands out there that you haven't probably heard of (Seagull, Hamilton etc...) that are on the more affordable side if you do not want to wear a fake watch. Check out watch sites like Jomashop.com, check out the EDF thread on watches and ask questions there if you want more advice or check out watch forums like watchuseek.

This is what I usually wear, except with a black nylon strap instead of the SS bracelet (probably one of the most comfortable SS bracelets I have ever owned though). As you can see it's a pretty simple, non busy diver watches. I also forgot to mention, that the more complications a watch has (IE: chronograph) the busier the face generally is. So if you want a busy dress watch, look for one that has a chronograph (wtF?!). Or if you want a simple sports watch, look for one without a chronograph as these watches tend to have subdials/more hands.

It's tough to say if I would ever wear this watch to a formal setting, but I love this watch. I bought a brown aftermarket strap and I think it looks pretty nice. Some people would say that anything with a chronograph is not a dress watch, but usually those people also have tons of money to spend on a whole array of different watches.

Again, these are prolly really expensive for most students. So opt for replicas or cheaper, respectable brands.

Thanks for that. I'll post some watches later...you'll see I am into much more modern designs.

Ended up buying this citizen watch a while back- bit influenced by breitlings style i think- very solid and good value
I am pretty into watches but the best tie up my liquidity wayyyy too much at this point.
Jaeger are pretty sick, also a fan of breitling and the rolex daytona
