That is pretty typical of most places -- not the diversity but the price range. Typically you have 2-4 bottles at $40-50 , 3-5 at $50-60, and then everything else is $80+
I miss living in argentina. Good bottles at some of the top restaurants in BA would cost you $25. Going out for dinner is so much more affordable when the drinks arent ridiculous. Pretty awesome when going out for a nice steak dinner with wine before every night out was a legitimate affordable option

I don't think he indicated how much he spends on wine before this post nor was my post supposed to be taken seriously in any possible way. Obviously, the joke is that Henry would spend more on wine than the dinner itself.

Last edited by GusJohnsonGOAT; 09-13-2011 at 05:01 PM. Reason: Actually he stated the wine estimate was vastly too low, which would indicate him dropping $$$ on wine.

Henry, I don't know how fancy eighteen is but after looking into the redwine list I just have to laugh what they are asking for some wines, especially the wines from France.. Are they trying to make them super exclusive or are they just really hard to get in the US/Canada?

e.g. the 2007 Chateau de Beaucastel, from chateauneuf du pape (rhone) has a markup multiplier of about 5 if I use the prices from Holland...

Oh and yes I know 2007 was one of the best years last decade or two.

I believe the standard restaurant markup on wine is 2-3X retail cost. I bought a bottle of that wine for a dinner party about a year ago and it was ~90-$100. As such the restaurant is not gauging.

I think the problem is Canada. There is heavy taxation of alcohol plus the government is the only source so they are the cause of the higher prices. Same goes for beer. To drink at home a case of domestic 15 beers = $23-24 which is more than $1.50 a beer. We also have similar issues with poultry and dairy. If Americans ever had to shop for chicken breasts or butter in a Canadian grocery store they would freak out.

Canadian liquor prices confirmed absurd. I've never had to compare food prices, but across the board liquor is far more expensive in Canada. Doesn't matter if you're buying a case of awful beer or if you're getting top shelf liquor, it's going to cost much more here.

Duty-free FTW.

That's a fantastic description.

Sure, but since the line between "quirky" and obnoxious (to take one defining trait from those characters) can vary by individual, how would you know if you met one? One person's "free spirit" is another person's "attention whore" (both of whom I probably couldn't stand after five days either).

Whenever one of those characters shows up in film, it seems like the writer took all the most endearing or mysterious qualities from past acquaintances and rolled them up into this impossibly appealing caricature. That's not to say there aren't plenty of girls who could fit the description, but they're not going to be some perfectly imperfect person with Mila Kunis' looks.

maybe I just dont remember the movie that well, but I dont remember thinking mila kunis was a mpdg in it. she was super hot though so maybe I was distracted

trust me, they exist. i once knew a girl (friend's ex-gf) who all she wanted out of life was to open a cafe called 'cafe schmafe' (it rhymes).

it would be themed with different club sandwhiches:
breakfast club (obv)
gentleman's club (rost beef, pastrami, manly ****)
baby sitter's club (kids sandwhich)
etc etc

avoid these girls at all costs.

Henry, if money wasn't much of an issue, how would you go about building a decent network as a student?

Going out a lot is by far the most important. Have a dozen or so places you go to with a half dozen on high rotation. Develop a relationship with the bar staff. Always pay for girls if they are alone even if they are unattractive. Be likeable.

Make sure you get a place that is located in the middle of the bar district. Live alone. Stock the place with an amazing bar and anything else people could possibly want.

Try to find one or two other guys in your similar situation and become friends with them.

If money allows -- buy a Porsche.

why a porsche as opposed to other high end vehicles?

I missed the word "other" in that post and thought, "Wow, we're really going to start a douchefest now."

lol that would be ridiculous even for me. give me more credit than that d00d

Just based on experience. You could go for other higher-end cars but they are either less known or more expensive.

No BMW because the 3-series completely dilutes the brand.

Yeah, only if you have $50k and can buy at minimum a Cayman. Saying the 3 series dilutes the BMW is just affirming the Boxster has diluted the Porsche brand, the Kompressor has diluted the Mercedes brand, etc.

Porsches also aren't extremely rare. You can stand out much better in a Lotus for nearly the same price as a Cayman.

Last edited by GusJohnsonGOAT; 09-14-2011 at 07:21 PM. Reason: Well the Boxster costs nearly as much as the Cayman, so guess you need $50k.
09-14-2011 , 07:29 PM
lol, I'd rather have my 3-series than any car in the 5-series lineup

M5 tho.

But seriously, the M3 is a 3 series car and is $60k; I wouldn't call that "diluting" the brand.
09-14-2011 , 07:39 PM
The 1-series dilutes the brand, the 328 maybe does since it doesn't drive all that great
09-14-2011 , 07:59 PM
My dream car is an all black volvo with black leather interior and those black rim things. When you constantly live on the edge, might as well balance it out with a safe ride!

New CLS63 AMG (sedan, naturally)

One day.

Someday.
