here are my thoughts for those aberlour:

Non-Chill-Filtered 12yo 48%

Strawberry jam, pears and apples with a bit of spice. Big round sweet. Classic speyside with a classic touch of sweet goosberry-grassy quality-benchmark Aberlour character.

15yo 43%

More floral, honeyed. Bit more spicy wood and less of the buttery note. Touch sweeter and maybe even lighter. Bitter sweet apple finish.

16yo 40%

Lighter, shyer but more complex. Real elegance. a grassy note joins the orchard fruit with a touch of tropical fruit notes. Nutmeg and cocoa powder and hazelnut praline.

18yo 43%

Much heavier with milk chocolate and sponge cake. Less fruit more chocolate.

Went to total wine to buy the laphroaig 10 cask strength and found the laphroaig 18 for $80. Even though I still have almost half a bottle of the 18 at home I could not pass on that price.

but batch 45 and 46 are said to be one of the best

I like the sherry. Also working through an arbelour a'bundah and balvenie 17 double wood, balvenie 15 carribean.

I'll check out the glendronach and arberlour 18. Whats the mcallan run? I have not been a big fan of the macallans I have had for the price.

What do you mean by independents?

i`m probably going to Cambridge for a teaching shop.
how are the living costs in Massachusetts?
will any online retailer ship whisky there?
does anyone know a nice whisky bar or shop there?

Far as I can tell Cambridge is a pretty lousy spot for whisky unfortunately, the liquor stores are all pretty overpriced (as are most things) and I don't really know any bars where you can get anything too exotic. I'm sure I'm missing something though and you're a much bigger whisky person than I am, and Boston is very easily accessible from here, so let me know if you come across anything interesting!

Also I've never tried to to ship whisky here but I think there's some sort of rule where you can't ship booze into the state, I've had issues with wine, they may have changed that though.

ETA: just found http://boston.cbslocal.com/top-lists...scotch-whisky/ and realized I've actually never been to any of those places, so maybe there is hope (Citizen has been on my to do list).

Hi all,

Good result on the gifts from my old workplace. Scotch Malt Whisky Society ( http://www.smws.co.uk) membership for me and Mrs Harris - who doesn't drink whisky but said "ooh, I hear the buildings are lovely and the food is good", so at least she will have something to do whilst I drink single barrel cask whiskies...

They also got me Amazon vouchers, John Lewis (think department store), a voucher for an upmarket restaurant on the Royal Mile, a spaetzle maker, some wine, gin and a bag of haribo for good measure. Think in all they collected about $800 which is pretty insane.

Long story short, now is a good time to visit Edinburgh since I can now sign you in to the whisky vaults. Whooooop! Also I have my whisky fringe ticket again for August 9th so will track those and ask opinions on the half time orange options.

Best,
Pete

Late breaking update.

The old fitz decanter was a fn waste of $50. I poured the last 1/4 of it in a mix drink.

The rath. Was $50 well spent.

Grabbed a bottle of Glenmorangie 18 extremely rare from the duty free. It's a nice looking box and all, but that's all I know of it right now--never tried it before.

Does it look better than it is?

Should I gift it or keep it?

If you like the Glenmorangie 10 you'll probably like the 18. I found it rather bland and prefer the Quinta ruban or the nectar d'or to it.

Visited the shop in Glasgow yesterday and they did indeed have a decent collection of bourbons and ryes. I was speaking to a member of staff who came accross as pretty knowledgeable and managed to get a couple of tastings while I was there. Following that I've asked them to contact me when they get some Weller bourbon back in stock.
