Guller,

There isn't really a more appropriate place to incorporate brags like that than a thread discussing the nuances of often very expensive whiskey.

My Whistlepigs Review

Whistle Pig 10 year old bottled at 100 proof: Smells of rye and some sweet stuff. Tastes of big spicy rye and sweet vanilla. Taste lingers on the tongue for a long while. Very nice.

Whistle Pig Boss Hog 12.75 year old bottled at 134.5 proof: Color is noticeably darker compared to the regular version. Smells much sweeter while still retaining lots of rye. It stings the tongue but also feels silky/thick like it's trying to solidify in your mouth. Taste is like the regular version except highly intensified. Almost makes the original taste dull afterwards. Very long pleasant finish. No real bitterness popping in the end. I love it.

The cask strength version costs more than twice as much as the normal version. I'm surprised to say that it was worth it.

I'm quite excited to have just found out about a new English distillery currently being built just about an hour away from me, in an area I love and visit quite a lot: http://www.lakesdistillery.com/our-distillery/

They expect to start distilling this summer, meaning the first whisky will be available in 2017. I'm almost tempted to join their founder-member scheme, where for £595 you get, amongst some other benefits, a bottle every year for 10 years from specially selected casks. The other option is the Connoisseurs Club, where £12,000 will get you your own cask. Oh to be rich....

bourbon hogshead 54,3%
nose:floral, oranges, nougat then the vanilla hits, some figs
taste:starts with turkish delight then it gets more fruity(pears, cherry)some vanilla before the pepper hits.

now with water and 2o minutes later:
nose:less floral on the nose much more fruits(sour cherry, lemon)nougat is still there but now less vanilla but some menthol and caraway.
taste:much rounder now, mountain honey, dried oranges, cumin and ends in white pepper.

i like it adding water and giving it time helped alot

That's weird, I just tried the link myself and it seems fine. Maybe just try Googling "Lake District distillery". The founder member option is pretty expensive. I think they're trying to sell it on the exclusivity of it by making a point of the fact you'll have a collection of 10 limited edition bottles that would be worth quite a bit by the end. Problem is I believe whisky is for drinking not for collecting, so the final worth of the collection means nothing to me. There are some other benefits like you get a couple of miniatures every year too and invitations to special dinners. It's the kind of thing I'd do if the money didn't really mean anything to me, but £600 is still a sizeable chunk to a small stakes grinder - especially when you're considering spending it on whisky!

Just stumbled on this thread and figured i'd post/sub. Is it limited to mostly whisky and not bourbon discussion? Been drinking a lot of Town Branch and Basil Hayden's lately. TB was a recommendation by a guy working at a really good wine/liquor store that recently opened and it did not disappoint. Definitely my new favorite to drink neat or make old fashioned's with etc.

Bourbon (and rye) discussion is definitely welcomed here. Heck, I even plan to review some Mezcal añejo that I just bought.

To keep up with the level of posting you brought with your first post in the steak thread you must review the Pappy 23 here. Otherwise it will be a letdown.

BTW, in my recent trip to Mexico the duty free selection was a total letdown. Fairly standard whiskies at not too competitive prices ($50+ for 1L Glenmorangie original? Loooooooool). I guess in Europe it must be different because I've seen some interesting bottles when reading about duty free whisky shopping.

anyone try this one yet? it just hit the shelves in LOL oregon liquor stores.

Tullamore D.E.W. Phoenix just took home a Gold Medal at the 2013 Irish Whiskey Masters for its taste. It is an exceptional whiskey, with mellow complexity, deep leafy, malty notes and smooth vanilla oakiness. It is a limited edition high strength, 55% ABV triple distilled Irish whiskey and finished in Old Oloroso Sherry casks. It is a blend of all three types of Irish whiskey, pure pot-still, malt and grain whiskey. It is non-chill filtered, and crafted to perfection in small exclusive batches. Each bottle is uniquely numbered

i nerer tried it but i found a nice review:

Tullamore Dew 'Phoenix' (55%, OB, 2013) Four starsAccording to the label this new baby was 'enriched in pot still' (not too sure about what that means, probably that it contains some pot still whiskey) and finished in 'old oloroso sherry cask'. It's a blend, said to be around 8 years old. Colour: full gold. Nose: starts with rather heavy notes of toasted oak before more fruits come through, as well as a little bubblegum. Raspberries, perhaps from the sherry, as well as touches of bananas and then overripe apples and pears. With water: the pot still character comes more to the front. Something slightly (and pleasantly) metallic. Mouth (neat): very sweet, all on a mix of apple juice, pears and vanilla fudge at first sips. A little more sweet sherry than in the nose, around raisins, then a light spiciness, with maybe a little sweet curry and cinnamon. Also tangerines. With water: becomes rounder and softer but the profile remains the same. Maybe a little more raisiny. Finish: not very long but these notes of sultanas are very pleasant. A little toasted oak again in the aftertaste. Comments: I think it's more or less Tullamore Dew 'Black' with more power. Now, I enjoy Tullamore Dew 'Black'. And excellent surprise, I think new owners William Grant are doing a great job with this old brand. - 85 points.

My best friend is getting married and his fiancé asked me if her getting him a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 15 year would be a good gift. I think this would be awesome of course, but I had a few questions for you all...

1) She says she found some online for $550. We are in California. Is there any way any store would still have a bottle on their shelves at this point, or is the secondary market her only option right now?

2) Would you rather get a bottle of Pappy's 15 year as a gift, or multiple bottles of good bourbon adding up to somewhere near $500, and if so, what would be on your list? (He really likes Basil Hayden and Angel's Envy)

There's little chance it's still on the shelves. If it's still on the shelves, it's because of an absurd mark-up. It's not worth $500. Nope. No way, no how.

Here's the thing, if she was gonna give him a bunch of harder to get bourbons, she'd have had to be getting them throughout the year. To get such bourbons though, you usually have to have a relationship with the store you are buying from.

My store doesn't put them on the shelves and usually makes sure that the best customers get their hands on them first. People may think that's wrong, but a person who comes in for a one-off rare bourbon is highly unlikely to come back when I'd much rather give back to the customers that keep us in business on a week-in, week-out basis.

Patton,

I think spending $500+ for pappy 15 is crazy.

Let me buck the trend and say I don't think its completely crazy to pay $500 for van winkle 15 /as a gift/.

I would never buy myself a bottle at anything near that cost, but its not out of line w. Secondary market pricing.

The real questions I'd have are:

1) is $500 a big deal to me? If its negligible in buyers financial situation, then I'd lean more towards buying.

2) what kind of bourbon drinker is this guy getting the gift? Is he the kind of guy who actually /likes/ bourbon, or is he the kind of guy that likes the image of being a bourbon drinker? If the later, and $500 doesn't matter to you, absolutely buy - the guy will really appreciate the gift, not because its super awesome blurbon or anything (although its plenty good), he'll appreciate it for the brand and the idea that he has a bottle of OMG van winkle!

He's probably somewhere in between those two types of bourbon drinkers. The money is not that big of a deal to them, and his fiancé mentioned that he's been talking about wanting to get a bottle for a while. I think I'll tell her to get a nice variety pack and then we can hunt for some Pappy's this fall.

Seems this store bought moonshine is a big thing down here in redneck country now. I decided to try some and see how close it was to the real thing. I got some Junior Johnson 100 proof midnight moon. It surprised me its not that far off the **** I used to buy from an old man that made some. Seems to be a good bit weaker but not bad at all.

^^ Junior Johnson's Apple Pie Moonshine is great stuff. I bought his black cherry flavored shine. Wasn't impressed with that.

Also had Popcorn Sutton's label and Tim Smith's Climax Moonshine. Popcorn's was better. I tried all of these but never reupped and bought any of them again. The only one that I would probably buy again is the Apple Pie

El Tinieblo Mezcal Joven

Proof: 80

Color: Water

Nose: Smoky leather.

Palate: Smoky leather. Slight to medium sweetness.

Finish: Slightly bitter. Smokiness lingers for a while.

The more taste, the more I like. Eager to try the aged versions. Only a question of reposado or anejo.

Tried some Wasmund's Single Malt last nite. Really interesting and delicious. I was tasting it blind and really stumped trying to figure out what on the menu it could be. No peaty smokiness like a scotch single malt. I was already a couple drinks in and don't remember too many specifics but it was similar to a bourbon but with a distinct root beerish flavor and some other unusual tasty notes I couldn't put a finger on.
