I was going to start a thread about it because I'm so pumped but The Irishman is coming out soon (supposedly). Man it is going to be so great. Can't wait for the discussion.

And it's not til August 2019, but One Upon a Time in Hollywood will be great, **** you Tarantino haters!

Widows was good bit dragged quite a but in the middle. Colin Farrell was really good imo

I’m not kidding. I literally wouldn’t watch it for $100. My time and psychological well-being are more valuable.

Haven't thought about Widows since I saw it. Completely forgettable.

and wtf is going on with Janel Monae's face? It looks half-formed. Like she's in the uncanny valley.

Cardboard Gangsters (2017) Not particularly great Irish crime flick regarding a drug dealer's quest for power, but what had me in stitches is that the film has such heavy Dublin accents/slang that Netflix subs hasn't a clue how to translate with whole lines of dialogue being woefully misinterpreted. Non Irish viewers will most likely be scratching their heads all throughout so probably best avoided.

Watched Downsizing and thought it was an extremely intriguing premise. I thought it started fairly strong and at some point just fell off of a steep cliff. In any event I fell asleep with about 20 minutes to go and have no interest in finding out how it ended.

Agree. The concept was pretty interesting, but the film ultimately failed, me thinks, and I stopped watching 25 minutes prior to the end. I think that The Adjustment Bureau (with Mat Damon as the protagonist as well) did a better job at playing with interesting themes, even if never dug deep enough...

Mary Poppins Returns - On the lower end of what I expected. It's bad, but it might be worth seeing if you're a big fan of the original movie and you're the type who likes callbacks/cameos/etc. I'm definitely not sorry that I saw it, but it's still bad.

There's one song/dance number that's good and arguably steals the whole movie. Largely unmemorable songs though.

There's one LMM "Hamilton-style rap" bit so he can really "show his stuff". Literally rolled my eyes.

I'm not sure if Blunt is trying to do a Julie Andrews impression here or what, but they would have been better served by her finding her own spin on the character. She has a few clever bits but is Mostly Mediocre in every Moment.

Should have cut a sequence or two (like the bathtub).

For a better Mary Poppins comeback, read the entirety of Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series.

In honor of Penny Marshall, I rewatched A League Of their Own.

I remember when this first came out, I was on an "anti-Hollywood schmaltz" kick, and was quite pretentious and serious about film. (More so than now!) But, just like back then, this movie still gets me. Yes, it's manipulative, but goddamn if it's not the best manipulative movie ever.

I love every part about it. It's so old-fashioned in its values and story-telling, but it works. Tom Hanks gives what is probably his most underrated performance. The bond between the sisters is like real life. And all of the minor character have perfect, moments. My favorite is probably Marla, the homely, uneducated girl who's Dad loves her so much and is so protective over her. Jon Lovitz is so damn funny.

Anyway, RIP Penny Marshall. She made some damn good movies. A League Of Their Own just might be her best.

I love this scene - the actor who plays Marla's dad just kills me:

Yes, I've rewatched that a few times over the years and enjoy it every time. Even Madonna is ok in it, now that's saying something!

I remember thinking the same things about Big. Rewatched it not too long ago and loved it.

You are correct, because the beginning of the movie was accurate to what really happened, as told in the book, then most of the end was made up for the movie. Unfortunately, IRL they pulled the plug on the guy's undercover KKK operation before anything really exciting managed to happen.

I also thought it got kinda silly, but still was an entertaining movie.
Ah that makes a lot of sense. I was entertained as well, but the movie went from great to "well theres no way that happened" to "wow this is pretty bad"
I wish the movie could have kept up with the really superb first 2/3 of the movie.

Hostiles was pretty great. I thought the acting was fantastic and the story was pretty good too. Only part I could have done without was
Spoiler:
the scene with the trappers.

I don't know how many here enjoy score and soundtrack playback outside of the movie scene, but I just got this CD for the Documentary Sad Hill: Unearthed... about resurrecting the original sad hill cemetery.

Any fan of the European western film movement should give it a listen.

Spider-Man: into the spiderverse.

My hatred of superhero movies is well documented. Normally I avoid them at all costs but this is getting such good buzz I caved.

It is absolutely brilliant! It’s one of the most visually stunning films I’ve ever seen and, unlike essentially every other comic book movie ever made, has an engaging story and characters you care about.

Someone took two seconds on the story! What a novel idea.

Not only is it the only superhero film I’ve ever seen I actually love, it’s a great film in general.

Grade:A

The Favourite was outstanding. Olivia Coleman should win every award. Loved the Stone/Weisz combat, too.

Seeing Vice tomorrow

Didn't see Vice. Stayed home, instead.

Saw Isle of Dogs, and it was outstanding. May be my favorite Wes Anderson movie now.

Are these movies made just for adults, or would they be good for kids as well? My nephews are about 7 and 10.

Everything about The Favourite was great. Complex characters, smart dialogue, elegantly shot (loved the fish-bowl effect), a trio of excellent performances. Should get lots of awards, probably won't because it will be competing with a bunch of more standard Oscar-bait films.
