He's pretty much a lost cause.
I have a friend like this. Some movies we agree on, then he'll tell me "Inglorious Basterds could have been a good movie if it had more action." Then he'll go on and on about why "Hangover II" was good =(

I rented Black Swan.

I am going to watch it later on. I hate Psychological thrillers. I hope this one is actually smart and entertaining. which I think it will be.

edit* and actually I dont think I have ever seen any of aronofskys(sp?) films before. It seems they have a dark feel to them

I couldn't follow or make any damn sense out of Performance and it became grating after a while so I turned it off after like 45 mins.

I started watching Black Swan last week and I'm about 1/2 way through atm. I must say I am enjoying it much more than I thought I would, not being a huge Aronofsky fan and the movie being about ballet and all.

I will def get around to finishing it - I'm not even at the lesbian sex scene yet! I also think Vincent Cassel instantly makes any movie better.

Cassel's performance doesn't get enough love, he did a fantastic job.

Black Swan was pretty good. although I still think Psychological thrillers are the worst genre for me. I wont watch one unless it is nominated for an acad award such as Black swan

Is Cassel ever less than great?

Fast and Furious 5 is the best new release I've seen this year, by far

Just watched Unknown, unfortunately

Pretty terrible story, but I kept watching hoping the action and eventual twist would be worth it -- nope.

I thought January Jones sucked in it too, which was surprising as I love her in Mad Men. Meh

I commented on this in the OOT X-men thread. January Jones is an awful actress. The vapid, flat affect, dead in the eyes routine works for Betty Draper but that's her only note. It's kind of like when no one heard of Sylvester Stallone and the Academy gave him a Best Actor nomination for the marble mouthed Rocky. A few films later and everyone realizes he wasn't acting, it's his only gear.

Jones is pretty as **** so that will keep her around for a while but my guess is she fizzles out post Mad Men.

If you haven't seen her hosting duties on SNL you're missing out on an incredible train wreck.

Hangover 2, as predicted, too similar to the first and not as funny.

Dude where's my car (only just seen this wtf?) decent but dumb and dumber/dinner with the schmucks both streaks better dumbass movies

Insidious - Not that scary and predictable.

Fast and Furios 5 - First one ive seen because i hate films like that my mate made me watch it, complete shiyte too unrealistic.

Criticising F5 as unrealistic is like complaining about Umberto D for being realistic.

F&F 5 succeeds imo because there is nothing superfluous in it.

its just a fun movie. most big action flicks are boring. that one wasn't. best action movie since unstoppable last year.
06-08-2011 , 08:55 AM
yes, by nothing superfluous I was meaning it kept within the limits of just being entertainment.

Hey, Vix, just remember that in the real world this analogy won't get you much mileage.

Revolutionary Road: Kate Winslett had HAL's voice down pat at the end of the film.

Cluny Brown is another Lubistch gem.

Barry Lyndon on BD.(amazon exclusive)

what a great Kubrick movie, technically superb.(keep your "Boring" comments to yourself)

also Once Upon a Time in the West on BD... movie look goods, but this transfer is missing something.... most color. the print looks blown out and lacking saturation even though it is the best version currently available.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil - I went into this movie thinking it was a straight up comedy/mockumentary about a fake band. Thus, I assumed it was supposed to be a laugh-a-minute type of movie. Instead I got something that (while funny) had far less comedy than I expected. I was kind of irritated with it towards the end because there are so many great mockumentaries out there that are actually funny and have already done what this movie tries to do. Then I did some research and found that all signs point to this band actually being real, which blew my mind.

So, assuming that the band is real, it makes this movie pretty damn hilarious and touching considering that the story of Anvil is pretty much exactly the same as This is Spinal Tap. If the band isn't real, it's just a mediocre knock off of TIST. I'm not really sure how I feel about it, actually.

A Hard Day's Night - hilarious and awesome Beatles movie. Pretty much every scene with the grandfather was gold. Their jokes and one liners were great. Plus...the Beatles are just fantastic.

Lola Montes - Max Ophuls' first (and last) color picture. It looked amazing all the way through. Ophuls was clearly a natural and it's a shame he didn't live to make more color movies. This one is about a woman who has lived through many trying events while always keeping up the hope of finding happiness. She ends up becoming a hollow shell of her former self as a circus performer who reenacts her life for the masses every night. Based on a true story. The movie's use of flashbacks to tell the plot was very well done as well. Great movie.
