I can watch the theatrical version or the final cut version as both are available to stream with various paid services/On Demand. I was probably going to watch it tonight. So can someone tell me if I should go ahead and watch the Final Cut version or wait for an opportunity to see the director's cut version?

I'm sure I can google the differences, but, miraculously I know very little about the movie despite it's age and popularity and I'd rather not spoil a major plot point or something stupid by reading about the differences.

Thanks.
I actually don't know. It was advertised as Directors Cut when I saw it in the theatre a few days ago. It was fantastic. I am not sure the difference between it and the Final Cut?

Saw The Insider for the first time. An absolute A+ for me. Epic performance by Crowe imo

The Insider is an easily forgotten film from that time but hard to find a better triple threat than The Insider-Gladiator-A Beautiful Mind by Crowe, he was the biggest star in the world then.

The Final Cut is basically the Director's Cut, just a few more tweaks, most of them cleaning up or enhancing the effects. It's certainly the more beautiful film and richer experience, but the theatrical version is hardly an abomination. If you like to stay on top of a story, that might be the best entry point.

If mood and mystery and visual wonder are more your jam, and you can deal with almost indecipherable narrative intricacies and mind****ing thematic bombast, go with the Final Cut. They're both very worthwhile both on their own and as a piece.

I should have just said "The Final Cut is the Deepest"

I disagree with this. I think the narrative of the theatrical release is far less coherent and I don't think there are many indecipharable narrative intricacies at all. If you want to stay on top of the story its actually much easier with the directors cut as every characters actions at every point is much easier to understand and contextualise.

Makes a lot of sense. When did the first one end and were they significantly longer?

the insider is criminally under-appreciated imo. it's a fascinating portrayal of a man compelled to do the right thing by circumstances as well as his innate decency and stubbornness. loved this movie.

have a insider/michael clayton movie night FTW!

I went to see Salt of the Earth. The synopsis made it sound like it would be a good watch but probably a little slow. It was a great watch and not slow at all. I was hooked at the very start of the film after seeing the first photograph.

It covers Sebastião Salgado's career and life while looking at his photographs. Truly amazing stuff. He started off in Brazil covering the workers there, then took pictures of the great tragedies in Africa, and then moved to landscapes and indigenous peoples. The way he talks and the topics he covers are incredibly interesting. After the film was over I would have gladly sat for another hour if the movie had kept going.

A few of the pics used in the film:

I'm not super hot on seeing either of these, but I'm going to end up seeing either Unfriended or Avengers in an hour and half.

Which would you pick?
05-03-2015 , 08:35 PM
Unfriended is more original than Avengers. Not as fun though. Light recommendation for Avengers
05-03-2015 , 09:52 PM
Picked unfriended. I didn't like the last Avengers. I'm too old. I've seen that movie too many times.

Unfriended

Meh. Horror is not my thing. Concept is interesting. Wise that they made it relatively short. Could have been a good 10 minute short or something.

Yeah, it hit me really hard in that way. It made me want to have something like that in my life, something to stand up against ha. Kind of silly I suppose but definitely had that impact on me.

Funny you say that, I'm in the middle of an Asia trip on Delta and both are available for in-flight movies, was planning on watching Michael Clayton on the way back. On the way over also caught the original Gambler, L.A. Confidential, and obv had to rewatch Lost in Translation bc first stop was Japan.

those are 5 phenomenal flicks! i'd rank them as follows:

l.a. confidential
the insider
the gambler (1974)
michael clayton
lost in translation

but they're all terrific

Is The Gambler worth watching? The Wahlberg one.

Worth watching if you do not compare it to the original (or any other respectable gambling movie, for that matter) and put away your thinking cap. So without any expectations and for your standard 2 + 2er, it is enjoyable yet forgettable.

Whiplash - fantastic, very enjoyable
