Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

The fact that Oscar Isaac wasn't even nominated for an Academy award is really a travesty. He's in every scene of the movie and he was just fantastic.

There were a few more magical moments that I'd need to rewatch the movie to point out. Keyword: moments. As a whole it didn't work much. Brandon Routh was horribly miscast among other serious problems.

I welcome his return to the X-Men franchise given how bad every one of them made by someone else has been. I know many people enjoyed First Class but I'm not one of them.
What was wrong with First Class?

It's nowhere near 95%. If you're including ****-faces who text and distract your vision, which you absolutely should, then you're having a non-annoying experience less than 50% of the time. Unless you live near an Alamo Drafthouse.

I've come to the conclusion that for me it's not really worth it except in very rare cases.

Last few years:

Wolf of Wall Street - texter
Ghostbusters - texter
Jake Gyllenhaal time loop movie - texter
My Week With Marilyn - old couple talking at normal volume directly behind me
Ponyo - children literally running through the aisles, parents doing nothing, not during a busy showing
Cars 2 - texter
Young Adult - general morons saying things like "this is the worst movie ever"
The Muppets - tweens loudly taking over the back of the theater

I can assure you, I have not seen 152 movies in theaters in the last few years that were nice experiences to counteract those 8 bad ones.

I watched two great "Isolation" war movies back to back the other day...

Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison
(1957) and Hell in the Pacific (1968)

Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison
(1957) stars Robert Mitchum and Debra Kerr (black Narcissus Fame) and was brilliantly directed by John Huston.

In 1944, Marine Corps Cpl. Allison finds himself washed ashore on a small island in the Pacific. The only other inhabitant is Sister Angela, a Catholic nun who herself only arrived a few days before with a priest. They found the small village deserted and the priest has since died. Over time, Allison falls in love with Sister Angela, but theirs is a relationship that is not meant to be. Their situation soon changes when Japanese troops arrive on the island but Allison's presence proves essential when the US Navy Attacks.

somewhat reminiscent of Black Narcissus where the kerr character falls in love, but no actual romance ensues and ultimately the two characters go there separate ways after sharing an intense and deep relationship WITHOUT physical contact or long term commitment.

Hell in the Pacific (1968) stars Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune as two opposite soldiers stranded on an island alone. they are worlds apart yet bound together by there similarities of honor, commitment and duty. Ultimately, they realize they are two like individuals and eventually, as in war, they are destroyed by forces outside there own control.

You must be breaking one of the most important rules

ALWAYS SIT IN THE FRONT
04-09-2014 , 04:44 PM
or just go to a higher end theater like the arclight cinemas.
04-09-2014 , 05:49 PM
Short Term 12.

I love movies like this which are slow paced and show conflicting sides a person in real life often has to deal with, rather than one singular issue which a character focuses on in many films.

in good company was surprisingly good n seems to fit your criteria

Do cinema's in the US not do a monthly/annual pass? It's ridic expensive to go to films here now, like £8 a ticket (maybe 12 bucks?). But its less than twice that for an unlimited monthly pass. As long as you go twice a month you've made profit so to speak. I often go every week or even to see two in one day.
04-09-2014 , 07:21 PM
Never heard of a pass
04-09-2014 , 07:23 PM
That sucks.

Unlimited Movies
It's definitely a good deal if you go a lot and you're near a biggish cinema that'll show a lot of releases.

I went to Arclight with wife and kid last weekend and 3D showing was $18.25 for each adult ticket.
04-09-2014 , 08:11 PM
is that a lot or a lil?
04-09-2014 , 08:13 PM
Archlight is really expensive. I went to the one in Hollywood once to see Volver while I was out in Cali (er, I guess this goes without saying). I ordered an absurdly expensive martini before the show too, lol. Assigned seating was weird. Anyways, yeah nice theater but I certainly wouldn't go there regularly even if I lived next to it.

I just go to the standard Regal cinema around here. We don't have any 'art' theaters. If you go regularly I recommend getting a Regal card because almost every time I go there's something in return: a small drink, small popcorn, and the occasional free ticket (this seems to come up every 4-5 visits and the drink/popcorn every 2 or so). It's worth getting.

I rarely actually eat popcorn so I give that one away to people in the concession line because I'm such a nice guy.

I'll get one next time. :P

The hotdogs are the nut low food. One day I didn't eat before the show so I bought a hotdog when I got there and... eww. It tasted more like nothing than actively being gross at least. I rarely purchase anything at all, I'll use the free drink if its available.

That scene where he tells Jean "I'm tired" is brutal. And when Bud Grossman shoots him down. Just... everything. But it does all this while not placing the character on a pedestal and it's so damn funny too. I can't stop watching, writing, or thinking about it either. Heh.
Thank you for posting about this over and over again. I'm not kidding. I keep putting off watching this but will remedy this posthaste. Your praise reminds me why no Coen film should be missed.

I enjoyed Valkyrie once. I recently tried watching it again and goddamn it was painful.

I welcome Singer's return to the X-Men franchise since for whatever reason they seem to be the only movies he's really good at making.

ya no the only "food" item i'll ever get is a pretzel so i have an excuse to shovel nacho cheese sauce into my mouth.

buy the icees are ELITE.

dunno why they're so much better then any other theaters but its like coke at mcdonalds vs burger king (at least i'm assuming....haven't had BK in years).

vix,

Also!

I feel the same about Superman Returns that I did about Valkyrie. It was a really cool novelty vehicle when it came out, but with rare exception, the whole damn film is dumb. Bringing Brando back was legit. But the rest? I admit, the airplane sequence grips me every time it happens, but it's still dumb dumb dumb. Even the CGI flying Routh is terrible quality. It looks like a video game character.

But I will say that the trailer for Returns was worth every awful second of the movie.

I also recently rewatched Man of Steel and feel that film too deserves to be burned and shredded. The flying looked great though. Here's hoping rumors of Batfleck polishing the script for the sequel are more than rumors.

I haven't seen Valkyrie or Superman Returns a second time, I believe you.

Oh hey, I watched it again today.

(No, really)

It's SUCH a great movie. Maybe I'll just sing its praises every single day for the rest of my life. It's feeling that way.

yeah, that is my golden rule as well.

They have an artsy theater in Montreal (French Canadian local movies and foreign) where no food/beverages is being sold : this remained one of a few places where you were guaranteed not to get your cinematic immersion experience interrupted.

But if not, sitting the most in the front, has always kept me immune to the site of texting.
