watched half or so of Star Trek Beyond from 2016, https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_trek_beyond

It started out decent but there was no plot. Just action. Didn't care what happened, so I ditched it. I am kinda picky about movies, tho.

Personally, I'd say if your looking for a Star Trek film, don't watch the JJ Abrams Trek films.

Somewhat agree, though I still LOVE the first JJ Trek. It's so much fun, it's smart, the references to the original timeline are satisfying rather than using nostalgia as a cheap trick. Not that there's a big difference between those two things beyond whether you feel satisfied or manipulated

I've been satisfyingly manipulated by JJ...

Saw Annihilation which I loved. It’s basically abstract film making on a huge budget. It’s metaphysics and cinematography are perfectly blended into a gorgeous pastich.

Grade: A+

you had never seen it before?

I always think is slightly funny that folks compare Annihilation with Arrival... to me the only thing they have in common is a Female lead and Science Fiction theology.

Arrival is a very traditional 2 dimensional story line that deals with time shifting, while Annihilation is much more abstract and interpretive... it's a beautiful film.

I am trying to score one of these Kurtz posters...

Serious question, is rap seen as a form of poetry?

Missed it in the theatre for some reason and really regretting it now. I spent most of the afternoon reading about it and am still not sure what it “means”. I honestly don’t care any more than I care what a Pollack or Kandinsky “mean”.

I felt enveloped by Annihilation. I couldn’t look away for a second. It’s the rare film that reminds us that yes film is the greatest artistic medium ever invented.

Agreed, though you have to agree that "memes" as a medium is at least a close second

nowadays they say yes, as they have bastardized it to no extent.

poetry has to rhyme. no exceptions to old fashioned me.

I'm old fashioned. But I don't mind it. That's how I want to be. As long as you agree. To stay old fashioned with me.

I'm spending a couple weeks in Newport, RI, since I'm still 16 days away from driving and house-sitting and sometimes dog-sitting. It's nice being in a town where I can go out every night if I want to.

Also have another date with aforementioned 50 year old tomorrow. I'm afraid she may like me.

You're over 60 and single and well-healed. It's all you can eat time, baby!

And get to Europe at the very least ffs.

I am over 60. I guess widowed and single are pretty much the same thing. Not sure about well-heeled.

Ray,

I really do know how well off I am. Much better off than I expected.

ymmv
That "Streisand vehicle" is unwatchable garbage, but I hope you know that it was a remake of a much earlier version starring Judy Garland that is an all-time classic. (And even that was a remake.)

And since Dom mentioned that this newest version has a Metacritic score of 88 so far, I thought I'd check to see what Judy Garland's version was scored and found that it is 89. If you were unaware of it, do yourself a favor and watch it when you can to help wipe away the memory of that Streisand dreck.

I thought the first one was fantastic, but have been sorely disappointed by the two follow-ups.

I still like the Mason/Garland version

trip report of date, please. If you could live blog it, that would be great, too.

Haha. That second request is way beyond my skill level.
