Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I think Abrams is like a great sous chef. He executes perfectly and keeps everything running smoothly, but he doesn't have any good ideas of his own. Nolan runs a brilliant food truck that delivers very clever interpretations of comfort food, but it's still just a food truck.

This tortured analogy is brought to you by somebody who's a bit hungry right now.

Those analogies are both provocative and intriguing, food for thought.

The last movie I saw was Star Wars.

Yeah, loved it as well. If you get a chance to see the director's first movie, Le Huitieme Jour, well worth the effort.

I'm stuck at 63. Think I'm missing the spider, and the turtle/dinosaur looking thing walking down the sidewalk.

Edit: Googled to get 65. I had guessed the one for the spider before, but must have spelled it wrong. I still don't see how the other one I missed gets the answer that I was missing.

Think my favourite was USA spray painted on the wall.

+1 on the Mr. Nobody love. Wonderful movie.

Saw LA Confidential for the first time. Really good movie. Can't fathom how I have missed it.

Ok, that makes sense. I was missing Arachnophobia (I spelled it the same as you) and Alien. I had already guessed Godzilla for the shadow on the wall, so I couldn't see how Alien related to the lizard on the sidewalk.

I haven't seen it since the original release, but I liked LA Confidential a lot.

So i've only seen 5 Kubrick films but i'm going to watch the majority, leaving out Fear and Desire and Killer's Kiss. From what i've read it seems most people don't think much of those two.

I have seen A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket (among my top 5 of all time), 2001:A Space Odyssey, The Shining and just today i watched Eyes Wide Shut.

I really like the unusual direction this movie went. Caught me totally off guard.
Spoiler:
I really liked the cult/orgy section.

Man, Kubrick was so good at getting you to think about his movies hours/days after you have watched it.

Since i know there are a lot of Kubrick fans here, what did you think of this one? People complain how slow going + how long it is. But i liked that about it. Would prob rate it a solid 8 but strangely i don't think i want to own it. Doesn't appear like it has a tonne of rewatchability for me...

Next on the list is Dr. Strangelove. I'm not a fan of funny/satirical movies. I pretty much only like serious stuff, but everyone praises this one as one of his best. I will be surprised if i like it to be honest. We'll see.

All this Tarantino talk made me realize that I needed to finally get around to watching Deathproof. Good god, the chase scene in this is balls-out astounding. A bit less heft than a top-tier QT movie, and way too many self-indulgent Tarantinoisms, but if you just want a solid Friday night popcorn movie, it's a blast.
01-09-2016 , 09:09 PM
The film itself gets various complaints but one thing few people can be negative about is that Mary Elizabeth has surely never looked better on film than here in 'Deathproof'.

Got 65/65 on the quiz but only after looking for *COUGH* hints.

Figured I'd write my thoughts on Hateful 8 now that I've had a day to think about it. Here's part of my review of Django and what I didn't like about it because it is pretty much the same complaint here.

His entire escape is awful. No one can think of anything bad enough to do to Django (after all the sick stuff we've already seen...) so he is given to slavers. He then talks the slavers into giving him a gun... right.

On top of that, the main villain is already dead. The three people remaining for Django to kill are an old black slave who can't walk without a cane, a seemingly stupid woman who seems pretty nice except for the fact she was the villain's sister, and some guy who had about a minute of screen time. It's just not a very good ending imo, and doesn't do anything close to living up to the rest of the movie.
Spoiler:
I'm not going to mention the gaping plot hole that the sheriff of Red Rock, and two bounty hunters living in the local area don't know what the most wanted criminals in the area look like. It's pretty ridiculous but I'm willing to overlook it, so I'm just not going to talk about it even though it's absolutely ******ed. Not going to even mention it. It's especially irksome because Kurt recognizes the sheriff as the son of some general in a state that is across the country, but still I'm not going to bring up how stupid that was. Also not going to mention leaving the general alive because he makes the cabin look better. Too stupid to waste time on.

So the movie is quite slow, but still interesting until the main characters arrive at the cabin and Sam Jackson talks about pulling out his dingus. Then the movie just goes to ****. This hour + buildup of the main characters is pretty much completely forgotten almost instantly. The sheriff forgets all his racism and buddies up with Sam despite the fact that Sam just murdered his hero. What was playing out like an intricate battle of wits just turns into a masturbatory film for QT. (I guess it is called Hateful 8 afterall, even though there's always at least 9 characters [10 with the guy in the floorboards] so that's to be expected though) The action is just gruesome for the sake of being gruesome and once the action starts it completely erases all the good build up done in the first half of the movie. The flashbacks also just didn't work for me. The narrator was awful, and this further erases the first part's build up because it just turns out that these are the bad guys and the rest doesn't matter. Would have been way more interesting if the movie had continued to explore the characters and kill them off in intelligent ways like Sam and the general's feud. Instead it just moves into mindless QT violence. While fine for some movies (I just talked about how much I like Kill bill 1 and 2 [had to include the 1 and 2 out of spite ] it's not fine when I've sat through an hour + build up for half the characters.)

Deathproof isnt a tarantino film... whats wrong with people.

Mschu,

Is it just that it's "Death Proof" instead of "Deathproof"? Or that's it's half of Grindhouse? (or is that Grind House?)

if ppl complain about a kubrick film being boring/slow they shouldn't be watching kubrick films.

dr strangelove is my all time fav movie, it's a masterpiece.

you have some great films left, barry lyndon (one of the most visually breathtaking films) paths of glory, the killing.
the only kubrick film I'm not much of a fan of is lolita (tho that could be due to me seeing it for the 1st time while tripping on acid and almost a having bad trip due to the film).

while technically kubrick films, I've never really considered spartacus and eyes wide shut to be fully realized kubrick films.
I do however enjoy them both.

I agree with most of this. Well not the watching lolita on acid part

The Killing is my favorite lesser known (ish, sorta) Kubrick film. Heist movie noir with voice-over narration just hits so many sweet spots for me, and he knocked it out of the park. Plus dialog written by Jim Thompson!

Monkey Business 1952

Too much screwball; not enough comedy.

Had a few decent spots, but mostly not so great.
