Just rip the band aid off.

If you want to save some $ you can always go here http://www.watchrecon.com/?brand=rol...ic&last_days=0

You could get one 15-20% off that's still under warranty.

Anyway another gentleman comes over and shows me the watch. Retail was $2600 on the price tag but they were willing to part with it for $1955. In the meantime he's man handling this thing. No glove, no pad, just puts it in my hand. Doesn't explain the movement, the features, just silent. I ask him to give me the price again (as he needed to double check what the lady on the phone told me). All the while he's holding this thing like it's a pair of Nike's. No care for it whatsoever and even knocks it into the cashier sliding door thing. Then as he's checking the price (he tosses the new watch on the cash register wooden area) and tells me I can purchase a warranty for $349 more. I tell him no thanks, he states they'll size it for me here. After sizing I cannot return the watch. Then he tells me to swipe my card.

So EDF, should I just buy this thing??? Someone help convince me. Because I still can't wrap my head around why I want this thing so bad.
This was Tourneau right? This story reeks of that joint.

The Rolex is a snap call.

Your wife subsidizing some of this makes it easier.. take her money and support and get the Sub, this opportunity may never come up again, nor will it be this easy..

Assuming a conventional marriage path, there might be a house and children in your future, good luck rationalizing a Rolex then. (this is where i say YOLO right?).. I acquired my entire collection before buying a house with my SO and having children. I have not added a watch since but I've been content since my collection is pretty decent (which includes a Sub).. Things will settle and I will likely add a piece in a few years but it's been a long time and I'm glad I made my purchases when I did.

Everything is pointing to just buying the Rolex.

For me, because I'm a nutjob, I couldn't be happy with buying anything but the Rolex. In my mind I'd look down at the other choice and keep saying to myself "I should have gotten the damn Rolex". (Or whatever watch I would agonize about in your situation).

That would weigh way more on me than the price. What you spend on something fades away over time. When I got engaged I spent 13k on my wife's ring. It annoyed me quite a bit. I remember bringing it up a year later to my best friend, and he laughed and said he still felt a little annoyed at what he spent on his wife's ring also.

Pretty much, that feeling is gone, I'm just happy she's still happy with it. 13k meant more to me years ago than it does now, as I'm sure the 7k for your watch will years from now, and one of the selling points is that it seems you will still cherish the purchase 5-10-20 years from today.

Buy the Rollie.

Be warned though, it is just the start. You'll see a lovely faded bezel GMT Master 16700 and want that, you'll want a white face explorer, you'll try on a SD and think the non bubble date is great and it's like the subs big brother and want that. Then obviously have a Daytona will be the real grail....
Very true...already thinking about the Panerai I want to buy in a few years.

Boom!

So...after finishing my errands today I called the lady at the local Rolex boutique who spent nearly 30 minutes with me earlier this week just talking about the watch. She was full of energy and remembered me, I asked if they still had the black sub no-date, she said she does, and even has one that is unboxed and not even displayed.

I told her I'd be by between 1-2pm.

I arrived and they had the watch waiting for me. Respected the timepiece to a T.
I tried it on, she went over all the functions, warranty card, etc...
I asked for her to write a valuation since I plan to insure (at least out the gate).

As lame as this sounds, with the watch in my hands again, I had a serious YOLO moment.
I've never really been in a situation like I'm in right now, where I could make something like this happen. Why resist it, why tempt fate. We could all wake up tomorrow with a terminal illness, or get struck by a car jogging down the street trying to get in our measly 45 minutes of cardio after sitting in a room/desk/whatever all day. Yea that's hyperbole but like Miles told Joel in Risky Business;

"Sometimes you just gotta say **** it."

Gave her my card and boom.

She had her watch guy size it for me and 3 links later, it's on the wrist.

I must say, I was looking for validation in all the wrong places. Friends who are well off watch enthusiasts, a fiancee who clearly supports me regardless what material ambitions I may have, my parents who both own Rolex's, a 2+2 sub-thread on watch appreciation.

Nonetheless I couldn't be more happier with this purchase.

Feast your eyes!

congrats, wear it in good health.

Resist the urge to polish it and know that if you keep it forever there are no scratches, only memories

Nice. Just as with the other Rolex, I wish there were a lil less writing near the bottom of the dial.

I've actually had the opposite experience at Tourneau. The last salesman I spoke to spent 20 minutes with me and my wife talking about Rolex, showing me a few and letting me put them on. He handled everything very carefully and was helpful with all my questions.

I've been to other ones where I've mostly been ignored, too. Especially the one in NYC. In King Of Prussia here in Philly they were great.

Quick question : wtf is up with the gloves?

first part of a two for two trade came in today. Bracelet is really comfortable and Omega's version of the glidelock is extremely convenient.
