I just tried this baby on today:

The Lange 1 range contains some of the most beautiful watches in the world. Love it in gold.

Plus AL&S is one of the lesser known high end brands, so it gets points for subtlety imo.

I've never particularly loved the look of most Orients, but always thought this was a really pretty watch

With regards to Benzinger, he does skeletonization in addition to movement and dial decoration and works on pretty much any type of movement.

The Grieb and Benzinger line is the high end line and is essentially in house though you could argue its not.

I'm not trying to start a flame war but I genuinely don't understand the appeal of Rolex watches. If you're going to spend 9k on this:

if chronographs are your thing what about:

iwc 5.4k aquatimer

or for much cheaper

4k

I was looking at prestige time so some of these watches are probably cheaper by 1-2k on that site than elsewhere but you get my point. I think all those designs are just infinitely superior to Rolex and Omega. But maybe it really is an Apples and Oranges thing?

Rolex has huge brand name recognition. In all honesty before being interested and learning a bit about watches (I still don't know crap, but I know a lot more than 3 weeks ago!), the only names I could even tell you are Rolex, Cartier, Tag, and Raymond Weil. I had no idea about IWCs or Patek Phillipes or even Tissot or whatever. I knew there were some expensive Rolexes and Cartiers, and that Rolex holds their value pretty well.

That's it. That's all I knew. I also don't know many people who know a lot about watches, except 1 person. Many of the watches discussed or shown in this thread are worth more than some peoples cars I hang out with. Spending, say, over 1,000 for a watch is simply out of the question for a large % of the population, and that's even worse now because of the lesser need of a watch due to cell phones being carried all the time. People just don't need watches anymore.

I guess it'd be like a homeless person knowing about Ferraris. Regular everyday people simply don't know much about high end watches, so its totally understandable for someone to get a Rolex to get more mass appeal or brand recognition. (I'm not saying that's what the above poster is thinking at all though) If I'd have spent 9k on a watch a month ago I'd have bought a Rolex, and if you'd have showed me an IWC I'd have said I have no idea what brand that is and I would never spend that much on a brand I never heard of.

Anyway, that's my perspective.

None of those are really similar stylistically. Maybe an Omega Planet Ocean or a Tag Aquaracer are better examples.

I like all of these except the Aquatimers (I have an Aquatimer, just don't like the chrono version, usually don't like chrono divers I think). I like the Rolex, too though. Just a classic look, though I'd prefer with the 1 color bezel.

imho rolexes are really ugly, that's why I'm asking

so people typically buy rolexes more for brand recognition? I'd imagine you'd still get a similar kind of reaction spending the same type of money on a nicer brand (iwc/patek/jlc)

I think people just know that a Rolex is "supposed to be a good watch". So people go with what they know, or what people in their circles talk about. For example, let's say you know the same amount of info (not much) on super cars. I'm no expert in that either, but if I was going to go out and buy one, I'd probably pick a Lamborghini, or a Ferarri. Now, maybe a Bugatti is a MUCH better car, or a Rolls Royce, or a Porsche, but I really don't know about them, so I get a Lambo or a Ferrari because I've heard those names my entire life. So I just pick out one that I like the look of. The same way with a Rolex. You just pick one out you like and go with it. Not strictly brand recognition, but more of comfort. Everyone talks about Rolex, so you get a Rolex. Almost like how maybe a Hyundai Equus may be better than cars in its class, but people might not feel comfortable with it because of the brand name/recognition.

Does that make sense?
