Last post on the subject as not to ruin the thread.
Basically due to our super tight gun laws almost noone owns personal firearms. Our firearm homicide rate per 100k population is 0.12 compared with USA's 2.97.
Therefore petty thugs/muggers cant get access to firearms and the most lethal readily available weapon is a knife. We have a problem with groups of young people thinking its 'cool' or acceptable to carry a knife around with them 'for protection'. These knifes are obviously not being carried for work related activities or to perform tasks like pvn etc have outlined above and are only going to be used in a violent way, hence our super tough stance on them. If you are caught carrying a knife here you will go to jail for around 1 year in 90% of cases.
Now the reason you find this strange is that the same type of kids that carry knifes in the UK can find easy access to guns in the USA. If people are looking for the best weapon to carry that can strike fear into people and do maximum damage if it comes to it then obviously they will choose a gun over a knife. It seems obvious that therefore knifes are not seen as a huge problem over there when you have kids in gangs carrying guns.
Rambled a bit and not made much of a point but basically our differences in knife culture stems from the available access to more dangerous weapons.
