I think it is in production, although very limited at the moment. If this ever comes down to a reasonable price, I'm definitely getting one!

A few weeks back I had some questions and got some advice here (and via PM) as I was trying to narrow down which direction I wanted to go for my next watch. The question essentially hinged on whether I wanted to spend $250, $750 or $1500 on a watch. Ultimately I decided I wanted a watch that had the best looks to price ratio, regardless of what it cost me (within that range of prices). Brand name really didn't matter to me, status, etc. isn't a priority. Below is the watch I've decided to get- it's exactly what I want and the price is right.

Question 1: Anyone have anything good/bad to say about Swiss Army watches?
Question 2: Buy it for $675 from an authorized dealer, or $425 from an online retailer that is not an authorized dealer, but gives me the same length of warranty (3 years) but requires all service (even battery, wtf?) to go through them? Question essentially boils down to the advantages of paying true retail from an authorized dealer versus a wholesaler.

Thanks

I still don't get how the pendulum works. It's not a perpetual motion machine, obviously, so where is the energy input?

I'm guessing it's something like two North magnets facing eachother cause the pendulum to go crazy and spin but what the hell do I know?

I read some more. It doesn't have a hairspring but it does still have a mainspring.

There are a few companies producing "Swiss Army" watches. The Victorinox ones seem pretty decent. They have standard commodity movements, I wouldn't have much hesitation buying from a grey market dealer, especially if it's a reputable one that will provide service.

You shouldn't need a battery in the first three years so I wouldn't worry too much about that, either.

If you are going for Swiss Army, Victorinox >>> Wenger

I don't know about knives but watch wise, the finish on Victorinox is quite a bit better than Wenger especially now that Swatch is trying to move the Victorinox brand more upmarket.

I'd put the line at 10k for that particular watch. Time to google!

I think I have my tastes pretty well narrowed down.

Going to buy this one for sure assuming it looks good in person. Super reasonably priced imo. Thanks to trplthrt for posting it awhile back.

Others I'm considering either in addition to that one or instead of, depending what I think of it when I see it in person.

those ones are all quite a bit more pricey. As you can see my tastes are basically:

Leather band (pref black).
large face. think those range from 40-45mm.
neutral colors-black, white, silver, grey...
flashy without being gaudy...?
like being able to see some of the inner workings through the face. seems like they call this tourbillon?

I think my favorite overall brand is JLC but they get really expensive and might be a little out of my budget for the ones of theirs that I really like. I really like the look of a lot of Zeniths as well but I hate that I associate the brand with 1980s TVs! (even tho they are obv unrelated)

I'd prefer to buy used if spending >$3k assuming it came with proper papers, warrenty etc. For the hamilton I think I'd just buy it new.

Any other advice as far as how to go about selecting a good watch and finding it at a good price? Other suggestions for watches that you think fit my taste would be awesome as well.

Thanks!

I find JLC as the 'sharpest/cleanest' of them all, but I am not sure if the price justifies. I have never seen many of those Zenith models in person but I do think they stand out. I don't think Hamilton is in the same league here. While they make solid watches, and sometimes a similar style, if you are even considering between these two levels and the price range increase is doable, just step it up and get the one you want. If that's more of a future event, nothing wrong with entry with the Hamilton and move from there. Those other ones are towards the top of the watch food chain, so nothing wrong with having something to look forward to. ;-)

Re: NLSoldier's options, it seemed kinda odd to choose the grey Glashutte to compare to more classic black bands on the others- so here's the same Senator Chrono in black:

It's quartz but at that price someone here may be interested (Jacob & Co. 40mm for $350).

Hello there,

I've been looking at an awful lot of entry-level watches that cost < $500 (£300). I'm looking for a mechanical/automatic movement with a leather strap and a silver or black dial. The watch I've absolutely fell in love with is part of the Bulova BVA series (Miyota movement)

I really like the open heart and it has an exhibition caseback:

I tried this watch on today... and it just felt right

Yeah, thats not a bad choice. Depending on the price, it could be a very good pickup.

Do you know if the crystal is sapphire or mineral?
