very expensive is relative.. is it "very expensive" to the person wearing the watch, or the general public.. to the general public the threshold is probably around $500, it certainly is not for me. non watch people generally don't notice non jeweled watches anyways.

i don't feel uncomfortable wearing any of my watches anywhere.. yesterday i was in walmart with my ss daytona on, no big deal. i would have felt a little more self conscious if i drove there in an aston though..

Reminds me of a story in a Watchuseek thread. The guy was complimented on his Omega, and the person asked how much it cost. He responded, "About four." The other person was like "400 dollars?! That's crazy! Why would you pay that much for a watch?"
Haha I remember reading this story on WUS too. I think it went something like: a female co-worker was asking a WIS how much his Planet Ocean costs because she was interested in getting a similar watch for her husband. The WUS guy replies, "I think these are running around 3 or 4 now." then the female co-worker responds, "Wow! I don't think I'd spend 3 or 4 hundred on a watch but thanks".

A Planet Ocean can cost anywhere from 3-5k depending on a few factors.

More times than not for me my watch is recognized by an unlikely person (at least to me) who is invariably an interesting character themselves. Kind of a cool bonus.

A far as fancy cars go just make sure you park it far away if you are buying anything of value. Also if you happen to negotiate a nulling of all your late fees at a Blockbuster don't park outside where all the staff can see you get back into said fancy car.

Sorry Bobby I wasn't attempting to be totally facetious. There is nothing wrong with TAG as a brand imo and you are not far off with your choices unlike the post just a few above this one. It's just that that particular style was their flagship back in the mid late 90's and is now not particularly fresh or unique. Just thought I would warn you.

No worries dude, i'm still in the deciding phase anyway, i wouldn't rush into buying an expensive item, just been onto a jewler who has got some of the new Rolex submarina's in, (they are rare as rocking horse ****) in the uk. I'm going for a look at the weekend, trouble is, there is no way i could justify buying one, apart from i guess they hold their value kinda.

I guess there are some sutuations I might feel uncomfortable due to security issues, but I'm guessing the average mugger, thief wouldn't know what a decent watch was, they would probably take your ipod and leave your jewel encrusted rolex president

Got back from this Teaching Assistant Conference for Graduates/Undergraduates at my college (UW-Seattle) and I don't think I've seen more digital watches in a room of 700 people in my life. Terrible tastes in watches! Even some hot girls had some small G-shocks hahah. That's Seattle for you though.

How much is it?

I hate watches with diamonds on it unless it is from a top brand. And by top brand I mean VC, ALS, AP, PP, RM etc etc...rolex wouldn't even be in that category.

+1 to the sentiment, although personally I'm fine with them on more luxury brands than yourself (Rolex and similar brands I think are fine).

It's definitely tacky to have diamonds on a non-luxury brand though, and to a watch purist it's especially tacky on a quartz movement.

For 100k you could get an actual high quality watch. Not some mediocre Rolex with tons of diamonds on it.

Onetwobit,

I just read the description for the watch again. Personally would not wear it because of the movement, or lack thereof. I'm sure if you give us your budget we can help you out with your choice of watch.

Onetwobit, if you had an antique mechanical Wittenauer, it would be pretty cool, but Wittenauer has long been bought by Bulova, who has been in turn bought by Citizen.

That said, Wittenauer does use swiss quartz (quartz watches are battery operated) instead of Japanese quartz movements like Bulova. But accuracy doesn't differ too much with quartz movements anyways so this point is kind of moot.

Most people in this thread will tell you that they don't like the gold and diamonds especially with a quartz watch, me included. That said, I am also a proponent of buy what you like.

But I will give you my complaints about it for you to mull over.

If you wear that watch out, the people who are knowledgeable about watches will scoff and think you are another douchebag who decided to get an iced out quartz watch.

People who aren't knowledgable about watches will see the gold and diamonds and ask you what watch you have, and when you reply with "its a Wittenauer" they'll say "oh thats nice" while inwardly thinking that they've never heard of that brand. And you can't even explain your watch because its a quartz and there isn't much interesting to say about it.

Still, buy what you like, but on this watch, if I was really looking for a quartz watch in this style, I would not spend over $300.

I actually don't like it, it's just very very cheap until midnight on this little site I visit. Just wanted to know what some knowledgeable chaps thought
