Rent, you can still highlight all you want unless the bookstore says no.

But what really motivates me to respond to posts about class participation is the argument that because some douchebags aren't able to censor themselves in class, then all participation is obnoxious and all questions should be reserved for office hours. There have been numerous posts ITT to that effect, and it is just patent nonsense and terrible advice for 1Ls. The answer is not to disengage from class for fear of being uncool and wasting everyone's time and money; it is to figure out the difference between positive
engagement and negative engagement.

Actually I did this and thought it helped a lot, especially early on. I think I mostly ended up using like 3 colors though, facts, holding, and something else I forget. It wasn't really useful for later (except maybe in class), but more about making you read more actively. In college you read more passively. After a while I think I got a lot better at separating out stuff. Also I think I wrote a full brief like twice and quickly got it down to 2-3 sentences because of the highlighting thing.

Just be socially aware. Participation is fine, over participation is not.

Asking a law student to be socially aware is like asking a whale to fly

In about 2 weeks I became aware that law students are supposed to wear collared **** from J Crew and not jerseys from Walmart; I just don't do anything about it.

one of my classes last semester had a husband and wife gunner team that sat together and pew-pew'd every class very consistently.

BTW, what's up with weekends when it comes to getting callbacks? I figure they don't do it on weekends - accurate?

Also, how slackerish are recruiting departments? Yesterday I only got in touch with 1 in 4 recruiting departments I tried, mostly during work hours and all before 6 pm.

Auto, not to pry but in case you posted and I missed, how did you end up ranking in your class? You just finished 1L at Penn right?

some firms are known to do almost all of their callbacks on weekends in a madhouse fashion (dechert off the top of my head) but most just do it during the week.

RDs are pretty lazy but i would definitely try to schedule the CB asap. the earlier you can get in the better bc if u wait too long theres a chance that when u finally get there only be 2-3 SA spots will be available instead of 20-25.

glad to c ur doin well! best of luck on the cbs.

i started off with a highlighter and margin notes with a pen.

but then, as i started reading the cases less and less, i just used a pen, underlined what was important and wrote a couple notes in the margins.

if i did it all again, i would stick with the pen method.

Happened to see this thread while I was looking on the main page. It reminds me of my days in law school

I'm a practicing patent attorney and I graduated in '08. If y'all have any questions for me, I'll be happy to answer them.

After skimming through this thread a bit, I noticed one discussion that is severely lacking here, and it somewhat surprises me given how most people on 2p2 are obsessive in maximizing EV.

I'm talking about writing competitions or submissions into journals for money, be it either prize money, compensation or scholarship award. A lot of those are only open to law students and are, frankly speaking, free money that for whatever reason most other students leave on the table. The money ranges from $50 to several thousand, but 1) free money is always good, 2) you can recycle papers and use papers that you would've needed to use for other classes anyway, and 3) almost nobody does it so you have little competition.

During my stay in lawschool I racked up almost 10k from that alone. One egregious example was for a copyright paper where the contest was judged first at a school level, then at a state level, then so on. First place at school level was $1k and second was $500. For one year, I ended up getting all the prize money because I was the only entrant for my school. Go figure.

I posted my grades earlier - Penn doesn't rank. A A- B+ B both semesters. I reall don't have a solid concept of where that would be rank-wise.

Is it really that true that the slots just dwindle over time? NY firms I've been scheduling with are basically all late (Sept. 7/8). I assumed the rolling system was roughly fair, but I have no actual concept of how it works. I got in real early with the Philly firms I got, though.
