did he do a whistle in Kelly's Heroes? Or just the dog barks? Am I conflating it with MASH?

Yes. And other great movies, such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Ordinary People, Klute, and, most memorable for me, Don't Look Now.

All these are great films, and Sutherland's is outstanding in all these.

RIP Donald Sutherland. He was always great. My first memory of him was from The Dirty Dozen. When he impersonated the general it was hilarious.

I thought I remembered whistle in Kelly's Heroes, but may have also conflated. Remember the dog barks for sure.

Plus, he just drives 'em. Doesn't know what makes them go.

On a side note, Kelly's Heroes was on when I got home a couple weeks ago, and in the final scenes, so I watched through. Noticed for the first time, in the many times I'd watched, that Harry Dean Stanton is credited as just Dean Stanton.

I think Kelly's Heroes was dog barks.

I watched it too. Sutherland is the MVP of the film closely followed by Eastwood's reactions to Oddball.

Sad about Martin Mull. Always enjoyed his humor.

Heard last night that former major-leaguer Orlando Cepeda died.

not just Martin Mull, but the Baby Bull Orlando Cepeda
he was 86ed yesterday less than two weeks after Say Hey
not sure if willingly but 24 and 30 both assist on the greatest giant triple play

I get years confused, but I think I saw this in a coffee shop/club in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh-- ~1970 or 1971. All the white audience were sitting there trying to grasp what was happening, but our black brothers were howling. Martin Mull single-handedly made me proud to be a chuck dude.

RIP man, I'm sad to see you go. You handled the stiletto so skillfully.

Robert Towne, Chinatown write and famous script doctor, 89. Chinatown really is a perfect script.

Towne seems to have rivaled Ben Hetch as the guy called in to fix scripts. He also, in addition to Chinatown, wrote and directed Personal Best, which, not exactly groundbreaking, was a different kind of sports film.

I guess I'm one of the non-graspers. I watched the beginning of that video but found nothing entertaining, was bored after a few minutes so turned it off. I don't remember seeing him in anything that I liked either.

I assume we've all read The Big Goodbye about the making of the script and movie. RIP

Chinatown, my favorite mainstream movie of the last half of the twentieth century. Some of the dialogue is as good as that in Hills Like White Elephants, particularly between Huston and Nicholson at the Albacore Club. Thank you Robert Towne.
