I can remember Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek doing the Saturday Game of the Week growing up. I think Joe G was doing the backup game at the time and then later Gowdy would get so busy doing football and other sports that Joe G would fill in and ultimately take over. Joe G would even host the Today Show back then, now think of that lol. Honestly I never really cared for him much, seemed a little phony somehow. But Kubek was just excellent, all class all the time.

My parents would always talk about Dizzy Dean and PW Reese days, and how Dizzy Dean was always in hot water for his antics.

Olivia Newton John, 73. After a decades long battle with cancer.

This one hurts. Always a favorite. Classy, sexy, with an amazing voice. Saw her in in Vegas just a few years ago, and she was just perfect.

Uhg!
RIP Olivia Newton Jahn and David McCollough

Oliva was always great and David McCullough is the greatest author I have ever read. He can take an obsure subject and make it the most fascinating reading imagineable. As a big non-fiction fan he was always at the top of my list for must reads.

My cousin was a PacBell lineman and on one hot day he was working Malibu. He was up a pole and heard a female voice ask him if he would like some iced tea when he was done.

He climbed down and saw a small lady in shades with a straw hat and he followed her into the kitchen. He said it wasn’t till she took her hat and shades off that he realized it was ONJ.

He said she was very nice and when he was leaving he said ‘wow’ and she giggled and gave him a hug.

She was really something.

RIP

My mom used to blast Olivia on the record player all the time when I was a kid. Olivia’s death hit her pretty hard today. RIP

I thought of David McCallum when I read this. Grrr.

Only know of McCullough's work, I understand them to be great.

All of us of a certain age had a crush on ONJ. Nice story above about giving the repairman some tea.

I listen to documentaries to help me fall asleep at night (it works great).

One of my favorite listens is David McCullough’s PBS bio of Napoleon…he really knows how to tell a tale.

On using cannon with grape shot to dissuade royalist mobs in Paris in a letter to his brother…

“”The enemy attacked us. We killed a great many of them….now, all is quiet. I could not be happier.”

Three weeks later, he was made a full general…..he was 26.”

I'm a big fan of McCullough's, loved the Adams and Truman bios, even his Wright brothers book was fascinating! Seemed like a really good guy too.

The reports said she was drunk and high on coke when she slammed into an occupied house, suffered severe brain damage, was in a comma for a week and they pulled the plug.

Always loved Heche in anything she was in...she could be sexy, funny, or dramatic. She also seemed to have a lot of demons. Damn shame. RIP

Pete Carril, longtime Princeton basketball coach, whose teams pulled off at least one stunning upset and a number of close ones in the NCAA tournament.

I'm guessing not many here know who this is, but Steve Worster died. Any kid my age living in longhorn land thought he was the greatest.

"Worster High On Canadian Football!" read the headlines. I'd sometimes play golf with his dad at Lyons.

No!

Inventor of the weave. He used to quote his dad: "The strong take from the weak; the smart take from the strong." I've re-quoted that hundreds of times--nobody gets it.

I had a friend growing up who played tennis at Lehigh, where Carril coached basketball for a year. To get the right salary, Lehigh also named Carril the head tennis coach, but according to my friend it was in name only, he never saw Carril once.

This doesn't deter my friend at all... Whenever he is discussing hoops, he begins every sentence with, "Back when I was playing for Pete Carril..."

One of the all-time greats.
