For at least two generations of British cops the standard greeting to a motorist caught speeding was “Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?”

John Conway;

If you are even slightly into math or programming, you definitely heard of Conway's Game of Life, but he was a modern giant of math. Dead at 82 thanks to covid.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Horton_Conway

... an English mathematician active in the theory of finite groups, knot theory, number theory, combinatorial game theory and coding theory. He also made contributions to many branches of recreational mathematics, most notably the invention of the cellular automaton called the Game of Life. Conway spent the first half of his long career at the University of Cambridge in England, and the second half at Princeton University in New Jersey, where he held the title John von Neumann Professor Emeritus.

I really liked his character as the Outlaw/villain sheriff in Silverado (1985 film). Which is a great, but often under appreciated, Western.

Silverado is indeed one of those underappreciated movie gems. Fantastic cast from top to bottom. RIP Dennehy.

i also immediately think of First Blood, which sent me down a rabbit hole to learn about the book for the first time...quite a bit different from the movie.

John Conway once sent me an email:

Quote:

Me Let P, Q be polytopes whose respective relative interiors are
disjoint. We know that P, Q can be separated by a hyperplane, but:

(1) If the vertices of P, Q are all integer points, is there a separating hyperplane that can be generated by integer points?

JC Yes, plainly. First choose any separating hyperplane, which will
have a positive minimal distance from either of the polytopes (which
I suppose compact). Now go a very great distance away, and choose
an integer point P1 within r = root(n) of this plane (as you can
obviously do). You can then modify the original plane so as to
make it go through P1 without changing its distance from the
polyhedra very much. Now (so long as you haven't got enough points
to determine the plane) choose a second point P2, not yet in the plane,
and adjust the plane to one containing P2, and so on. It's clear that
the successive adjustments can be made arbitrarily small near the
polytopes by taking the Pk far enough away.

Me (2) [More generally] Is there a set of vertices of P, Q that
generates a separating hyperplane in the affine hull of P, Q?

JC Yes. The argument works when you replace the integer points by
any lattice whatsoever - in particular the integer points in this
affine hull.

Brian Dennehy always seemed to be the most interesting character in most of the movies in which he appeared.

Don Shula was a titanic figure in sports history. He's up there on any football Mt. Rushmore, up there with Bear Bryant, Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, and a few others.
