I had my students do their research paper on "Strange Fruit" this semester. After listening to it, one guy said so that's what Kanye sampled in "Blood on the Leaves."

I like my students to learn things they don't know about when they do research.

I pose this question to them (and to myself as well): can protest songs influence behavior?

I have them research "Strange Fruit" because they don't think anything happened before they were born or is over a hundred years old.

Sure, reference "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield and "Ohio" by CSN (among many others of that era).

This is a magnificent question. Not much of quality has been written about it over the years, if anything.

can protest books influence behavior?
seems the answer to both might the same
another question: is influence (change) in the context of your question characterized as incremental, widespread, resistance, defiance, or other?

Probably all of those, but my guess is that protest songs sing to the choir. Perhaps I'm wrong.

This has always been my guess, but maybe it emboldens believers to go out and recruit other believers.

if the concept was not effective would propaganda still exist?

I think propaganda is designed to maintain a system, whereas protest is intended to change one.

RIP David Soul. When we were little, my brother was Starsky and I was Hutch, and a cardboard box was that really cool car they had. Soul was also great in Salems Lot.

And the Starsky & Hutch theme is amazing!

Many times protests are propaganda! I participated in a few back in The Sixties.

Then I wised up.

I used to manage a bar ~1980. After closing, I'd come home and be too wound up to sleep, so I'd flick on the TV. ESPN was just beginning and they were desperate for content, so they would play old European soccer matches in the wee hours.

I'd roll one, pop open a beer and try to follow what was going on. Although what he was doing made little sense to me, my favorite player soon became some crazy German guy. He'd start out behind the fullbacks, let off the big kick, then run it down by sweeping in out of nowhere, and attack from the wing, 2" in front of the goalie's nose.

GOAL!

I wonder wtf ever happened to that guy...

RIP

Your post reminded me of watching a soccer match in Italy on TV, IÂ’m certain it was fairly meaningless but I was drinking beer and enjoying the evening and the patrons were as oblivious as I was to the meaningless of it all. Such is life. But I enjoyed it nonetheless.
