Kobe was only 1 1/2 months older than I am. I remember he was a thing while I was in high school. I don't follow sports, but note that Magic announcing he had AIDs on national television before Kobe was in the NBA.

The horrific way he died, and the senselessness of it (knowing that even the LAPD wasn't in the air), just says everything. He had his 13 year old daughter. So much life was snuffed out that day, and with his age, it affected me a lot more than other celebrities.

I loved his performance in Lonely Are the Brave...the fist fight with the one armed Vet...an Ed Abbey touch since the movie was made from his novel.

Jesus, I thought he'd live forever.

Kirk Douglass was the last of classic Hollywood, I think....now gone forever.

I liked all his stuff, but Lonely are the Brave was easily my favorite.

I hope TCM will start cranking out some of his early noir stuff, it would be great to binge it.

Ace In The Hole is a great film but depressing as hell.

Lonely Are The Brave also features, in a tiny role, Carroll O'Connor.

Heh, I picked Lonely are the Brave in the Years Draft and mentioned that he gets nailed in the end by Archie.

Kirk Douglas was the real thing, a real movie star but also a real mensch. They aren't making men like that these days, that's for damn sure.

Natalie Wood would have disagreed.

Maybe as far as the men are concerned, but Olivia De Havilland is still alive and definitely qualifies as classic Hollywood with her iconic roles as Melanie in GWTW, and as Maid Marion to Errol Flynn's Robin Hood.

She was born about 6 months before Kirk Douglas. She's 103 closing in on 104.

Because she's old she'd probably word it "I'm going to be 105 next year"

Would you consider Norman Lloyd from the golden age of Hollywood?

By some measures Ron Howard would be considered from the golden age of Hollywood...

RIP Kirk

Here's the ordered list of what I've seen him in from good to not so good:

Paths of Glory
Ace in the Hole
A Letter to Three Wives
Spartacus
The Bad and the Beautiful
Last Train from Gun Hill
A Gunfight
Champion
The Indian Fighter
The Light at the Edge of the World
Posse
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Man Without a Star
The War Wagon
Tough Guys
Along the Great Divide
The Way West
It Runs in the Family
The Heroes of Telemark
Ulysses
Greedy
My Dear Secretary
The Last Sunset
The Final Countdown
The Big Trees
Saturn 3
The Arangement
The Fury
A Lovely Way to Die

That's 29 movies.

The only actors I've seen in more are:

Samuel L. Jackson (39)
Robert De Niro (33)
Morgan Freeman (32)
Buster Keaton (31)
Bruce Willis (31)

I was quite the fan of Kirk. He was also great in The Simpsons and I think it's really badass how he had a stroke and then proceeded to live another 24 years.

Anyone who contributes to the book thread should read this appreciation of George Steiner
The essays I’ve read by him have a narrative flow unusual for Lit Crit
His short book on Bobby Fischer (and Spassky) in Iceland was very fine (Fields of Force)
