I think it depends on what you're looking for in a community. I'm in the northern-most part of the "South Loop"; I live in Printer's Row and absolutely love it. I agree, it definitely doesn't have the nightlife of the north side or Bucktown/Wicker Park, but it also doesn't have the congestion either.
I can get to virtually anywhere in the city in no time, because I'm a 5 minute walk from the blue line, red line, brown line, or purple line. I can also be on the Dan Ryan, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Stevenson, or LSD within 2 minutes. If you work downtown, walking to work everyday can't be beat.
As Cosines said, there are grocery stores aplenty (Trader Joe's, Jewel, Whole Foods, Dominicks) and the dining/bar scene is improving at a pretty quick pace (Acadia, City Tavern, Square One). Supposedly they have a bunch of retailers lined up for when the revamp of the Roosevelt Collection is complete, so that has the potential to spice things up a bit down here as well. As is, it's great having a quality theater within walking distance.
I'm also 32 with a fiance, so I can certainly understand that my need for drunken 4am nights has waned. Anyway, just wanted to point out there are certainly some positive things going on down here, and depending on a person's priorities, this could be the perfect spot in the city.
