I haven't spent much time in Wicker / Logan so I can't really comment on them but I always advise people to move in the Lincoln Park / Lakeview area when considering moving to Chicago. They are a little more expensive to live in but the demographic is great and there are tons of bars, shows, restaurants to try.
Quick update on this from a few weeks ago: looked at apartments last week and settled on a 1br in Lakeview. The location is perfect...the other places I looked at we're further north so a bit cheaper and more for the $ but I couldn't turn the Lakeview apt down.

Very excited about the move. See you guys in September!

Yeah I had stuff from Tamale guy one time at Happy Village and didn't think they were anything special really.

Nice, what kind of building is it? Which area? I've found good 1BRs to be tough to find in non-highrises.

It's a pretty standard brick apartment, only 5 floors. Got lucky enough to get the top floor

It's right off North Broadway, close to the intersection of N. Broadway and West Belmont.

They are very tough to find. I spoke to a guy in the leasing business who said demand is higher for apartments then its been in over 20 years. In fact my landlord owns 4 different apartment complexes and was only able to show me 2 apartments total that would be available for Sept as everything else is locked up...

Uh oh, boystown! You must be a queer lol

I'm in the apartment business and can confirm that's pretty much true about the market. my owners keep jacking rents and it doesn't make a difference. **** gets rented so fast, it's incredible.

calm, you won't have to worry about dkgo being in your area

the 9/1 date is gonna be great for you as you'll be stumbling distance from dryhop when it opens (or at least is supposed to open) in september. Frog&Snail (Dale Levitski's french bistro) is also right by where you're gonna live

Haha, yeah I almost made a Boystown joke but I wasn't sure where one neighborhood ends and the other begins technically. Oh well, doesn't really bother me.

I'll definitely look into those two places KDawg.

Should we follow the general rule of stay east of Ashland even if we're looking in Lincoln Park? There's a place we're looking at tommorow at 2451 N. Clybourn, what is the general consensus for the are?

That's the "real estate agent version" of Lincoln Park. That is to say, don't live there if you want to live in Lincoln Park. It's just some random sketchy spot with undersold condos they're trying to market to unsuspecting recent college grads.

Thank you! My gf starts a job on the 13th and we've been looking for places for a couple of weeks now without much luck. We live ~5 hours away atm and apartments are on the market for such a short time it's really hard to lock anything down. She can stay with family near Milwaukee and commute in each day until we find something which sucks but it's the only way we'll be able to actually look at anything. What do you think the best resource for actually finding an apartment is? We've been stalking craigslist, etc. so far. We really like the west loop area, but are really open to anywhere that is safe and clean. Our budget is 1600 w/parking for a 1 bedroom. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Where are your jobs located at in the city? A $1600 budget shouldn't be hard to find.

625 n. Michigan. and I work primarily from home with lots of trips to the Horseshoe. We're pretty picky with what we want (balcony, parking, etc.)

You'll have a lot to choose from, even in this rental market. Do you want to be in LP specifically? If you can do a neighborhood like River North you can probably find a 1bed highrise with a balcony and garage parking.

I haven't found any 1 bedrooms in river north including parking for under 1600. She lived in river north for 2 years and loved it. We would be all for it. At this point were just going to wait until she's there to look. We get our hopes up and then 1 day later they're gone.

parking included is asking too much for that price. you should be able to find something for $1700 all in though for sure.

1600 is our max. What would 212 e. Cullerton be like? South loop in general? Thank you guys!

Piece pizza tonight. White sauce, sautéed mushrooms, roasted garlic, onions and mashed potatoes toppings. Absolute nuts.

As far as the neighborhood, I'm not a fan at all. There's decent eating options, grocery stores and there's a ton of new development down there but I'd really recommend the north side.

Agree. There was a point where it looked like the south loop was gonna really turn into something, but it really stalled out after the crash in 08.

If the only thing that's important to you is getting a good deal and having the minimal commute, and your job is in a relatively small area of downtown, then the south loop isn't so bad. But otherwise, it's pretty terrible. The only thing really worth going to is the Showplace Icon movie theater (because you can bring booze in to the theater), and otherwise the south loop is mostly good because it means people living in Hyde Park have significantly better access to groceries, Target, etc than they did before.
