Good read and I don't think your year was so bad, at least it wasn't boring as far as I can tell.

Reason its bad to get invested in people as fast as you did, like red stripe, is because you hardly know them and its basically a super high variance move to let someone you don't know have control of your emotional well being. That is why people always say "too soon", or at least it is why they should be saying it.
