It's easier than going windows -> OSX. Most things are very similar, you don't need to touch the command line unless you have to.

We are going about this backwards.

What is your issue with Windows and what do you want to accomplish with this transition?

good question

i have a limited budget for computers and i would generally like to achieve as much as i can within it,

i find windows slow and frustrating often

i think i would probably generate some pleasure from using something not-windows just because

You could just boot linux off a usbkey and try it.

But go ahead, install it. You won't regret it more than the other way.

to be fair to me, there was the great pub incident of me reinstalling windows, which is notable much like the dog which didn't bark in the night.

You can install Ubuntu without a new partition on top of windows now. Removing it is just as simple as uninstalling too.

one of my 3 laptops in regular rotation has like a 60gb HD of which 50odd of it is used up just because.

If I move my photos to an external HD, would that be accessible by the ubunto?

ubuntu doesn't read NTFS natively. good chance your HD is formatted NTFS.

Cheers

I am a poster child for wasted potential. Both my parents were punch card era computer people, and I grew up with computers, and then at some point at like age 13, when I should have been going full johnny mnemonic, I lost interest and missed the chance to develop some really valuable skills more or less for free.

I've already overheard my wife discussing with a family member quitting her job

close. it reads ntfs and I am pretty sure writes to it.

problem is installing it on an NTFS partition as you need ext for linus/unix file permissions.

Nods sagely.

Just let linux be linux. Sacrifice a laptop and do a clean install. See if you like it.

I knew that Mexico had never won. But I didn't realize their results were so bad.

They've only ever made the QFs twice (and both times they were the hosts). Never beyond. I'm really amazed by that.

Bah. This is easy to say when you have so many laptops laying around you pass them out like candy on Halloween.

You'd have to run it in WINE.

I leave the rest as an exercise for the neophyte linuxer.

Last time I tried to run pokerstars (2.5 years ago?) under wine was a pretty bad experience. It was slow and resource intensive.

But maybe it was my machine...
