High-speed rail is American liberals' white whale.
Stuff like Buy America is part of the reason that these projects cost way more than they should.
There is no way it wouldn't have been competitive with air travel once it was finally connected into downtown LA. For such a short trip, the simplified check-in procedures would negate the slower travel speed for such a short trip. And prices would then reflect that. I don't remember what the projections were as far as revenue vs expenses, but I-15 is already choked and LAS is going to exceed its capacity soon, so money is going to have to be spent soon to add capacity regardless of which type of project it is.
I was never convinced that this particular project was actually worth the money it would cost, although it sounded a lot better once they figured out how to actually get it all the way to LA. In principle, at least, I like the idea of high-speed rail better than widening freeways or building bigger airports. Cars are terribly inefficient at moving people in pretty much every way possible, and airports take up ridiculous amounts of land while lowering quality of life for miles around them. They either have to be located far away from anything interesting which wipes out a lot of the time savings that they enable, or their effects will mar the quality of the interesting stuff nearby. It's lose/lose.
