Atakdog has quite the strong will
And a unique story to spill
With talents a plenty
Gets girls before twenty
with help from a little blue pill

In honor of poetry month, I'd like to present an essay. This essay was written by a current undergraduate in my fraternity. It was forwarded to the alumni for lolz's. It was not written as a joke. It was submitted for a sociology 101 class. I am waiting to hear what the grade was.

edit: Poetry at its finest, imo. Would love to hear a performance of this at a "slam".

To Culture a UR Football Game

Going to a Richmond football game you kind of know already what to expect. You can sense what the atmosphere might be like, and you may have a general vision for how the game is going to turn out. We get this ideal by how our society runs. Our culture makes up what our focus will be like in relation to other people that share the same practices. We reference together the same cultural elements: symbols, norms, values, belief, and material culture. In a UR football game each of these societal outlooks come to play to mark how we move and interact as a single body. It is what is under the live action that really determines what is going on. A University of Richmond football game provides a windowsill to weave in cultural elements that evolve our society.

First, a symbol is an element that attaches meaning to what we are watching and allows us to communicate with one another in a fashion that readily comes to light. It allows us to communicate so that the symbols are already understood and we know how it is performing in its given setting. For example, Richmond football branches out to various symbols like the spider logo. When fans see the spider drawing on the helmet, they can immediately correlate this to the team itself. It identifies who we are rooting for, represents our mascot/team, and it points out who is fighting who. The spider sign transmits to the fans’s eyes in the stadium and without thinking we can put our desires onto this anchor symbol. The ball is another symbol that ties together all of the prisms of light that go into the game. It is centerfold to what we are watching, and it comes out as a precious treasure once both sides have spoke because that is what our pride has been passing through. The gestures at a football game are another component of symbolic culture. One could look at the game as nothing but gestures. The coaches use hand signals to call plays. Players use a dance after something meaningful happens. Fans make signs, clap their hands to show just who they are looking out for. Culturally, these gestures may be keys to model how we see our actions. Overall, the people in the stadium feed off these symbols to gravitate to a form of communication.

Underlying our attitudes and commitment are our values. We receive values by picking out what we find most pleasurable in our lives. When going to a UR football game we first have to decide if we want to go or not. This can be determined by whether or not the school puts a high ranking on the level of interest going into the game. We want to watch if it is going to draw the most excitement or if the level of play is high. We value winning so when we go to the games we are spirited by how the team is doing. Otherwise, our community outpour falls lame and the game is considerably less watchable unless in some cases where people value something else in particular. This can represent our culture wanting to be the prize. Another thing everyone values is fame. When we go to the Richmond football stadium we are going out to look for identities that make up how we look. From the start we are affiliated to the Richmond name making us high status supporters of a group following in some ways. We can see this demonstration by looking out and seeing jerseys, face paint, and other game attires. This all goes into the stadium fire pit as our representation for that place in time showing what the game was intending to be like.

Norms act as a major factor at a UR football game especially when no one wants anything to get out of hand. Norms are like rules of behavior that dictate almost how people are supposed to be with each other. At the game it basically travels our footsteps and creates the atmosphere for how things are running. A prevalent example is consumption of alcohol. Students are drawn to the idea of drinking at a game and so it becomes a fun and almost casual thing to do while watching football. It works as another center for reasons to go to the game with the expectation that it will be there. Another norm to pay attention to is how people comport themselves when they are in the bleachers. If someone is standing in front and everyone else is sitting there is some gripping tension going on there. The group needs to play fair or else some people will get angry and it will cause anything from nothing to the extremes. The rules of the game can be considered a norm. Everybody is watching the game and there needs to be a set of purposeful boundaries for people to be able to watch in a way that seems reasonable to them. People come to expect a lot and generally it goes accordingly.

A belief is something that can be attributed to what grounds we are standing on. We are at games in belief that everything we are acting to is right. Belief gives us a side to be on so that our own input has meaning. A quarterback believes that he is going to complete each play so he is fully committed to doing his best. It provides a driving force that ignites competition, and a place to stand behind. Everybody can join a bit easier thereby playing out odds to suspend ones self. It makes the game hard to tear apart as it offers a true significance to some.

Past the energy of the game and all of the players contributing to the activities can be the material culture. One big prevailing artifact for a Richmond game is the stadium. The stadium holds everyone together in one tight form. You cannot take from the stadium, but it can be used as a settling ground for everybody to watch in. There is also normally a common thread to how people dress to the games. Then there are other objects like banners and pom-pons that fill the arena with another direction to offer life to.

The Richmond football games host all of cultures elements to some degree. The interest in the games come out for this reason so people can experience it and tell it. It allows us to see all ranging faces and personalities. It starts out with the game itself (the center of the pie), but it is these cultural building blocks that form the game to take place. What happens can be explained through a trial of these aspects.
