Is tidal good? Or will it just destroy the ocean?

i was listenign to chris hedges podcast, and dennis kucinich made an interesting prediction. he said in a couple years there will be no more nato, and no more EU. obv he is wrong lol, but it was still interesting.

he said that the war in ukraine and sanctions have made energy prices and inflation and go up too much. and usa forced nato and eu to go along with it, and people don't want it

It's a strange world when weed is legalized but cigarettes outlawed.

I periodically wonder if you took a survey what percentage of people could actually identify fascism from a list of policy options. It's a term thrown about so much that it's really lost most meaning.

Yeah my impression is that most people don’t know what fascism is, especially in this thread, and especially Dustin

We've had this discussion before.

One thing I do know especially about is how language works, but even though words can have different meanings depending on context, I've kept my definition of fascism consistent for at least the last 20 years. I don't think I'll be changing it anytime soon.

Although it shouldn't come as too much surprise that those most interested in restricting freedom are the least interested in definitions of fascism that involve freedom.

usa is a fascist country, right? i think so

right wing
militaristic
racist
undemocratic

the question of freedom is a little more nuanced. i don't believe we have meaningful freedom, or meaningful opportunity/power to speak our minds, or bring about change

like we are free to speak whatever words or phrases... but there are words and phrases that are not allowed to have any voice.

for example i'm free to say that mega corporations and government are in collusion to keep us from ever having democracy, therefore we don't live in a free democratic society, and usa is a giant sham... and those who serve in the military and police are doing the work of our oppressors

but that is a message that isn't allowed a platform because we live in a fascist society where our rulers control which messages have a large platform

ralph nader tried to spread that message when he ran for president a bunch of times. and he was allowed to say it. but people weren't allowed to hear on an equal platform with the message of usa freedom democracy number one

also how free are we when most of us have to work 40 hours a week, and barely scrape by, with all of our labor, and most of our income going to our rulers

and of course the millions of us who are actually in literal prison

And to think there are people who want to make us even less free by taking away our right to tobacco, a plant product (I've been reading about nightshades) used in the Americas for thousands of years.

Imagine having to work so many hours for so little and then not even being allowed to smoke
