That would be more of a ZING if Trump had ever claimed to be.

There's no defending that X at the start of xenophobia. What kind of word even starts with X.

In general, I think nationalism is often mistaken for xenophobia these days, in order to try to marginalize and discredit it. No borders baby, we're all the same etc. Another example of how successful the Left has been in framing the debate by defining the terms.

It always was, of course.

And yes, there are some occasions where some level of xenophobia might be justifiable (it's generally worse than "looking at individuals", of course, but for instance for a nation that ripped itself away from another one it might make sense to say not want your president to have actual allegiances to that other country.

Obviously (it should not need to be said, but I know my audience) that possible justification does not reasonably apply here.

one can be patriotic

without being repressive

race is a red herring.

i think it is probably 80% of the time.

Kioshk - why can't I be nationalistic, proud of a strong America, and be welcoming of foreign nationals escaping difficult and/or dangerous environments?

Wouldn't the latter be something to be proud about?

This of course has nothing to do with Trump being an overtly bigoted bigot, since the guy he is attacking is part of the same nation and has been his entire life.

Seriously, I can't believe you clowns are even trying to talk around this. It's **** like this that makes those "oh you guys cry racism/etc too much" comments you like to make so obviously full of ****. If you won't even call THIS out for what it really is, because party/ideology > country >>>> basic human decency, you lose all moral justification to even discuss this stuff and you deserve to be laughed at and marginalized.

this issue has nothing to do with nationalism because everyone involved is an American; the fact that the Trump cultists are gripping onto the word like a life preserver illustrates the impotence of their arguments.

to your point, though, america is completely intertwined with immigrants. a nation built upon people gathering up everything they own, taking a risk, and coming here for a better life. that type of risk-taking and that desire for more/better for your children is the foundation of the american dream. this doesn't mean we should have open borders or not control the flow of immigrants, but it also means we must recognize that the immigrant experience has been crucial to our country becoming the greatest place on earth.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Last few days have been a big momentum shift. Trump was up as high as 33%, but then the Trump University stuff came out, and Hilary had her foreign policy speech (which, unusually for her, was very good), and now he's way down at 24%. That's a huge swing in a couple of days.

Should have bet earlier perhaps. Tough to call Trumps high point. May be yet to come.

I'm just looking on the first page of google, but I don't think there is a mainstream list that has America as #1 for quality of life.

Vale Ali.

What a boxer in the ring.
What a fighter outside the ring.

Never been a boxer myself, but they say any man that steps into a professional boxing ring must have a heart as big as a lion. None was bigger than his.

Willing to go to gaol for his beliefs - a giant in the Anti-Vietnam war movement.
A colossal figure in the 20th century black movement around the world.

Olympic Champ.
3 times heavy weight champ.

And still that really was just the beginning.

What a titanic presence.

Few figures of the 20th century were able to exert their presence upon the world by sheer willpower and charisma the way Ali did.

An damn the man was pretty - as he so famously reminded all of us.

The fight is over now champ.
Thanks for the memories.

James Fallows @JamesFallows

It's 48 hrs since HRC ripped pending GOP nominee as unstable, unprepared, ignorant, etc

Not aware of *any* GOP figure rising to rebut
(also suggested he wants to be a dictator)

almost like this stuff is accurate, and nobody wants to defend him.

man, nobody could've predicted that.

I have to recalibrate my judgment of Domer after all the sense he's been making recently

Zork, if you start feeling tight in the chest, you should call 911.. don't wait til its too late, common mistake
