Facebook will be fine, because MS put 1 billion dollars in to it.

I didn't even have the internet when I was growing up......lol

I can't imagine growing up with cell phones, internet, msn.....

I had to call my friends on their home phone lines (never past 10 pm), or walk to their house....lol

That's only true because everyone has computers now.

But despite that it's a lot more likely that things will evolve and new generations will have new things and reject the ways of the older generation.

I think we may be arguing different things. You are saying something Facebook (I mean.. technically Myspace should get the credit, right?) inspired will be around in the future. Sure it will. Myspace was just a hybrid of personal web pages and instant messaging which came around awhile ago. Personal web pages and instant messaging were just byproducts of IRC and BBS's.

This is just part of the evolution. I suppose if you Facebook cannot be considered a fad none of it can as its part of the internet socializing evolution. I'm not arguing that something that has Myspace inspirations will not be around in the future. Just that it will be much different than what we have now.

btw, everyone in my high school (oh.. 10 years ago) used IM every day for a long time.

It's not that I don't understand the impact of social networking.. it's that it is constantly evolving.

agreed. I guess I have a different connotation of the word fad. Just because something eventually changes or evolves or even disappears doesn't mean it was a fad. Of course brand names are going to come and go. But to me, a fad is a short-lived superficial flavor. Windows probably won't be around forever, but it's certainly not a fad

But yea anyways, lets go back to making fun of dan or something

ICQ might not be around still, but I don't think you can call it a fad.
ICQ is by far the most popular here.

Pretty much everything you are saying is what people were saying back in the IRC [...] days
IRC is still very much alive and kicking. And I'd say that the beginning of IRC/BBS had a different group of people (tech guys), facebook started out designed for the lazman from day one.
And on a sidenote, this "forum" is nothing but a new age BBS.

I bought a 320GB external hard drive for $70 the other day, including tax & shipping. External storage is super cheap, and backing up is super important. /preaching data security (encrypt it!)
Yeah I'm always amazed how cheap storage is everytime I check the stores it seems like I can get 2x for the same price.
Also if you encrypt stuff, make sure to keep your encryption keys safe. It's amazing how many people don't. A friend of mine works in IT-security and every single case he was involved in where someone had encrypted storage they also had stored the key somewere on an unencrypted drive.

Also I dunno what you are talking about with the IMing beeing dead. I and pretty much everyone I know uses IMs every day and it's pretty awesome for multinational companies (especially if you do programming and can paste some code quickly etc)

I don't find it in particularly good taste to request to be in the group and not friend me. There are 4-5 of you who know that I'm talking about you.

I should probably tag you in all the pictures so you have to manually delete the tags.
