TS has an amazing historicity going for it. Not sure how many times I could replay it, tbh, for a game as expensive as I've seen it, but it's pretty cool as 1v1's go, and lasts a good few hours each time.

Puerto Rico felt too much like Catan to really pique me. Then again, I was trounced when I played it.

Um, I am not seeing how Puerto Rico is anything like Catan at all...

If you want a more complex Puerto Rico then check out Agricola

so you differentiate via mechanics and theme

neither are particularly interesting in PR (except I kinda liked the bank/ship aspect)

I remember buying Puerto Rico simply for its acclaim. Felt shallow as I purchased it and had never played or knew anything about it. But it is definitely one of my favourites in my collection, and one I wish we played more. I don't think many of my group appreciate the depth of the game; I typically stomp my group when I play it, even against people who have had at least several plays before.
I love Twilight Struggle. If I don't get to play in person much, I love getting a a distant friend involved in a game on this site:

It has Twilight Struggle and a bunch of others. Hannibal is also one of my favorites, but it has a few more machinations beyond TS's. I like this site because it tracks, automates, adjudicates and rolls. It isn't just an interface.

I really like lords of water deep tho I've only played twice. Much better than Agricola.

Any recommendations for a 1 v 1 game that is easy to take on holiday please? Maybe a card game, but nothing too fantasy.

Maybe Coup?

Coup not very good with 2. It shines with more. My most played games with 2 are battle line, haggis and mr jack pocket. All come in small boxes and travel well.

If you want something super light then Love Letter. I do mean super light, some of the rounds pretty much play themselves.

Mr. Jack is pretty good.

Battle Line/Schotten-Totten (the two games are virtually identical) I'd say is maybe my fave light two-player game.

Backgammon is good as well if you've never played that. One of those easy to learn hard to master games.

Lost Cities is OK as well, but more of a gamer's game because it plays a bit solitaire-ish. Not a lot of interaction.

Not a card game, but blokus (or something like that) was a pretty fun game that doesn't take much time to learn or play.

Looks fun but it's $55 in the UK.

I ordered a few of those recommended above, thank you

Managed to find my copy of blokus in a thrift store. It's a good thrifter since it's sold at some of the major stores here.

Sent from my Nexus 5 using 2+2 Forums
