I'll predict 80%+ for 1D opener. Let's see how it goes! (I'll even abstain!)

(I think if you flopped it to majors you might see a lot more 2C openers. That might also be an interesting alternate problem.)

OBVIOUSLY

Minors is awkward, because you will need to rebid 3D and 4C to bring your suits in the picture while with any major you have a fair chance to be able to do that lower.

This is pairs and the risk of 1D being passed out is something I will take to MUCH BETTER control the rest of the auction. I would probably even open 1D in IMPs, but in pairs it is a ****ing nobrainer.

Opening 1D is basically a "if I can get by this round" bid, and you probably will; jump shift to 3C is easy next and a good description. It's a lot easier to find the right spot (which might still be 3NT) after that, and I don't think it's particularly close. Yes, it's conceivable that this goes 1D-all pass, but if that happens, 1) where are the majors, and 2) maybe we didn't miss game. Given the other BW poll where most people consider it routine to respond to 1D on a 4405 3 count, I'm really not too worried about scoring up +170 in 1D.

edit: how about with a 2 loser hand? :P

Might not actually; it sucks that 1D-1M-2C is wide ranging but there you go. I think those hands pretty well encompass the maximum and minimum for the jump shift though. Put all the values in the minors and I’m more apt to jump shift. It’s close enough that I jump shift with C AT98x but not AT5xx.

I mean, I’m playing Precision now so whatever

Sure. I would not be ashamed to dummy it, but also not consider it a maximum.

There are PLENTY of rebids in various situations where opener can have a range of more than 4 HCP wide, so I do not see the problem.

Seems like bidding 2S is the winner; I'll probably bid 3S over 3H when it happens. Only "seven points" but the double fit is worth a lot. Wouldn't be surprised if just plopping 4S on the table was a winner.

I would bid 2s if two of those clubs would have been hearts. With this hand you are obviously not stopping below game. i would bid some opponents suit (hopefully not interpreted as natural) and after that 4S, showing I have something really good.

I think 2D is best, allowing LHO to bid 2H so partner can see my heart shortness.
