Yes because you need a new partner if he's showing a void in hearts here.

In fairness, it's basically impossible to construct a hand consistent with this auction.

I mean, 4s is really suspect and suggests he might have a heart void (he should really be able to KC at this point otherwise).

The only thing I can think is like void / Kx / Axxx / AKQJTxx or something goofy, and id have just bid 5s over 4h (and I'm stodgy and would have opened this 1c anyway).

You'll certainly have a good discussion about this auction in the post-mortem!

What's your minimum to show a positive in hearts? Basically what hands are you KC-ing with here where you don't have the ace of hearts? At some point if your hand sucks you need to just bid 5d.

What hands will you be able to bid a grand off the ace of hearts because he showed you that void where he can't just bid it anyway?

Think how nice and easy it would have been: 4n - 5c; 5n - 7d

Minimum positive is 10+ and 2/3 or 3/5 top honors in the suit. Everything else goes through 2D.

He had

AKx
Void
AKTx
AQxxxx

I agree that I did not like him showing void hearts. I ended up bidding 7 since I figured it had a shot opposite most 4 keycard 2C openers.

Sort of a last-minute decision: I will be in Reno Friday evening through Sunday. If any of y'all will be there, get in touch and we can try to get together. Or play, if you want.

Even as a baby bridge player, that seems... uh... suboptimal.

Opening 2C with that hand is terrible. 1C is the correct opener.

Well, it's not TERRIBLE. I agree that I'd open 1C but it's actually pretty close (like, give me the T9 of clubs and I feel like it's a 2C opener).

Bidding question:

Precision context auction

1S-5D
vs
1S-1NT-3S-5D
vs
1S-1NT-4S-5D

2D over 1S would be natural GF, 3D would be Bergen, 4D splinter, 5D not discussed but we do NOT play any form of Exclusion Blackwood.

It is not jut about the strength of your hand, it is about how you think the bidding will develop.
Over 2C the auction is going to be awkward about 95% of the time. Exchange the black suits and by all means, open 2C.

2S 2NT
3H 4H
5S 6C
6D 7H (doubled)
7S (doubled)

2C through 3H were all alerted. But the only explanation given was 3H is void in hearts 5/5 minors. Apparently the 1D opener said he screwed up, so I'm guessing that is not what 3H was supposed to be based on the 7H call.
