man i must have really missed something obvious in that list then

a foreign comic strip created between 1960-1989 where the main character would have been way too easy for us to guess (but the character we're trying to guess isn't best known from movies or TV)

i wonder if we ran bad where the main character from the comic strip is very well known from movies or TV, but the character in question never really appeared in the movies/TV versions of the comic strip, and thus is only known from the comic strip itself

Hint #1: as far as I can tell, none of the characters of the strip are famous for movies and TV.
Hint #2: I thought the main character would have been too easy to guess for reasons that are different from fame. I thought that main character would have been more easy to search and single out.
Hint #3: the character I have in mind is of a different nationality than the creator(s) of the strip, though the main character shares the creator's nationality.

I don't think I should help you guys any more than that.

True; anything jumping to mind from that list?

I'm working on it...

It's worth noting that the questions about TV/movie said "Is the character primarily known from this"

But the question about the comic strip said "Is it from a newspaper or comic strip?"

So it could be a video game character that happened to have some japanese comic strip before breaking out as a game.

"I thought the main character would have been too easy to guess for reasons that are different from fame. I thought that main character would have been more easy to search and single out."

We have to consider this as a pretty big clue too. Why would it be easy to find the main character?

Was he expecting questions about age? work? humanity? Could it be a robot/alien as the main character, with a human sidekick?

Actually nope, the main character must also be human because they too have a nationality.

Sorry just to clarify, the vast majority of those posted aren't going to be possible. That's just my first trimming of the initial list of 1100 down to around 250

What sort of comic strip even has people of different nationalities?

And with something so distinguishing about the main character it would be too easy to find them.

The comic strip is on Eskimo's list as well.

Also, apparently I grossly overestimated how popular the comic is in the US.

Not US here, fwiw, Aussie. Though I feel when it comes to European comic strips they may be similar.

Are there any Euros around for whom anything on that list stands out?

FWIW the strip made it to your third list as well.
I'm trying to think of another hint that might be helpful but not too revealing; nothing comes to mind yet.

I'll try this: while not the title character (so now you know the main character is also the title character!) this character is from the core cast, and it's the only character from the core cast that does not share the author's nationality. There is another character with the same nationality, but it is a very minor one.

----------------------
I realize that giving many hints might spoil the fun, but I feel a bit guilty for overestimating how easy it would have been to guess; this might have led to confusion.

If people want me to stop providing hints, LMK.

could be Manolito from that strip I mentioned before, Mafalda

the strip and the creator are Argentinian, and Manolito is the son of Spanish migrants with a nickname tied to his Spanish origin, so that might fit
