Whatever I'm envisioning is probably way too basic. Either I didn't look enough places or there aren't any good introductory tutorials out there, because I never got further than installing node successfully when I fiddled with it a few months back.

But yeah, you should contact someone like codecademy and help them do an "after you've got it set up" type intro for the newbs.

What's the lightest weight in terms of RAM of way to serve a webserver for just a static html page? Can't be Node/Connect right?

Wait I can just do that directly with nginx that I'm already using right? I'm bad at this.

Bash?

(I mean, that's a joke, but the absolute lightest way would be an extremely simple single threaded specialized c program, probably)

Server running nginx serving up js and images to a site that does a 4-8 million page views a month:

Mem: 31M Active, 1114M Inact, 256M Wired, 33M Cache, 161M Buf, 37M Free

Server sitting next to it serving up ads for the same web site, running apache, far fewer hits but runs php/mysql for ad tracking

Mem: 236M Active, 453M Inact, 396M Wired, 460K Cache, 161M Buf, 384M Free

Go with nginx, it's the best for static files.

Lol yes - but there are much lighter webservers that nginx if you don't want any bells and whistles. Stuff like this: https://www.npmjs.com/package/http-server

also if you're serving pure static pages and want instant free scale, can't you just use github pages?

I think I broke a record today. I applied to a job around 10am this morning and got the rejection letter before 6pm. For some reason, that made me sort of like the company more.

You can serve plain HTML without using an HTTP server. Just direct nginx to the root of your home file.

You won't be able to use a plain HTTP server to create a unique domain. You need a proxy server (nginx, apache, etc) to let the server know where the appropriate files are for the url is.

caveat: this assumes you are using something like digital ocean.

I meant HTTP server generically to mean http-server, Jetty, etc... thanks for the correction.

Btw if any of you have a node app you're trying to get off the ground I'll be glad to help for free just to have something to do to keep my skills sharp. I'm also really interested in docker, noSQL, angular 2 and web components. I guess I could convert my open source projects to ES-6 and typescript.

But another thing I'm not that good at is making up stuff to do just for myself. I need someone to count on me to finish it. Otherwise I tend to stop when I hit the painful part and wander over to 2p2 to argue politics instead.
Thanks suzzer99 for the help in getting my nodejs api off the ground.

Now the hard part is getting myself to stop being lazy and finish off the application. I'll let you guys know when it's live.

NP Max. Funny how you almost didn't reach out to me because you thought your project was too small and simple. That's the most fun I've had programming in months. If anyone else has a node/docker side project please bring it on.

Hooray! I just spent 2 days deploying a new server and loading up 3 websites. Learned something new.... as always.

Jenkins defaults to 2 working processes. That was a fun rabbit hunt.

How's your Nginx going, Grue?

Been lazy lately and haven't looked into it. Having those "end of project" blues where its like ok wtf do I do next. Thinking about picking up Go for reals because all the other cool javascript kids do it. Or you know, play video games.

In case anyone missed it, as I did, Fedora 24 has been released. Updating now. The size is 1.8 gigs.

Can't wait to see what it looks like.
