I think you are correct to be paranoid suzzer, keep being aggressive, even if a few people get butthurt about it, it isn't likely to have much of an impact on you after this is over.

It is amazing how career things (changing jobs, promotions, etc.) are such an emotional thing for people, and yet somehow the ability for those involved in the process to have empathy for those going through is almost always lacking.

You can get the Algorithm Design Manual in pdf version for free, Google is your friend.

I have resigned to my fate that I will forever float along in HR purgatory, where time and communication have no meaning. I am a Traveler of the Universe now, neither alive nor dead.

Go to myapps in play store to see app history. you can still install it from there.

Well **** it, I made my own reality. It was starting to leak out anyway (not from me).

Quote:
I’m still waiting for final confirmation from HR that it’s a done deal. But before this completely leaks out, I’ll just let everyone know now. On June 1st I will transition into a new role with the [new team] as a Principal Technical Architect. I will be evaluating new technologies and helping to set standards and drive adoption across all of our Consumer & Small Business sites/apps.

That’s the tough news. The good news is I will still be based out of this office, and [boss's boss] has been kind enough to even let me keep my desk! Although I will be working from home more, so I will move to somewhere away from the window so someone else can have the prime real estate. But I will still be around and may even be working directly with some of you on initiatives like [cross-team project that introduced me to all these guys]. Also I will be around to see [current project] out the door for 2016 and help with perf testing. And of course the node framework will always be my baby. I will always be available to help guide changes and develop new features when necessary.

I’m really excited about the chance to help prototype and evaluate new technology, as well as drive adoption of new frameworks and standards. Those of you who work with me closely know this is what gets me really fired up. I enjoy designing and laying the plumbing that allows our brilliant front end developers devote their focus to developing great features. Also I’ll be in a great position to raise my hand and say “Hey, [current team] already does that, let’s see if we can leverage what they’re already doing” when the situation arises. The Platform team is already pushing hard for the adoption of angular across a wide array of sites and applications. They’ve been trying to make inroads with node and play as well.

The tough part will be not working closely with as many of you anymore. I feel like I could live several lifetimes and be lucky to have a job where everyone is such a joy to work with. Despite my sometimes gruff exterior, most days this doesn’t even feel like a job. It feels like going to work on cool stuff and hang out with your friends. It takes the sting out to know I’ll still see everyone regularly. [current team] will always be family to me.

So again, I will still be around and hopefully working with you all to some degree or another for years to come.

What is the general thoughts on LinkedIn? I'm getting multiple direct messages a week from recruiters. Most are from good companies. Recruiters seem to drool at "big data" and "distributed systems". I'm currently not looking and give the standard reevaluate in 6 months excuse. I made the mistake of mentioning my green card status to one recruiter and that's for them to mention her company ex is very willing to transfer Green Card process. He even had the gall to say that the Green Card process could be sped up if I switch companies.

An engineer that I respect gave advice that recruiters want to always move people in lateral positions. It's just too risky for them to try to place people at higher positions than their current one.

So I'm considering simply closing my account. I have a decent network and it would be easy enough to open one in the future. I've yet to even get a phone screen through the site. Unless your real network, LinkedIn doesn't seem to help much when you really need it.

But you never know when an all time dream job might come through. Seems worth it to just put up with spam. If there's any kind of spam in the world I tolerate - it's recruiters.

Netflix and Tinder both contacted me through linkedIn.

Yeah true. Big companies have contacted me too but it seems more efficient to seek those companies out yourself when looking.

Congrats on the job! Was the work from home more your request? I always assumed senior and management had to be around all the time. Are they scheduling meeting s around your schedule

Nah my new department is scattered all over the country. So it doesn't really matter to them if I'm in my local office or not.

I worked for another large corporation from 2001-2005 and wound up working from home full time there too. The bad news is I quit because I was bored and had little to work on, then discovered online poker a few months later. I could have basically gotten paid to learn online poker.

Congrats, that sounds like it will be a really fun role. I imagine it should also open up some exciting stretch options for career advancement in 3-5 years.

So it turns out that these guys still wanted me to go through a standard interview loop which I was annoyed by, but not entirely unhappy with because I can use all the practice I can get for the other interviews. The technical questions were on the easy side - each technical interviewer had already seen my take-home and may have been somewhat prejudiced. "So you're clearly really good" and "we were really impressed by your assignment" were both things I heard multiple times from several different interviewers.

Out of the 6 leads that went at least to the phone interview, 5 are still alive, 1 done with the interview loop, 4 interview loops still to go. In 2 weeks or so, I should be done with all the interviews. I think I need at least 2 offers to get to a comp level I'm happy with. Can't complain much given how the whole process started with a strikeout.

Yeah, suzzer, the more I think about it, the more it seems like a role where you get a lot of professional networking for free both inside and outside of the organization - if you become well-respected in your role, you'd have substantial influence in terms of what technologies get adopted and so on at a very large company and you can leverage this into more clout among platform owner types that are desperate for early adopters and get yourself more visibility that way.

A new quarter has just begun and it seems that so far, my classes won't be consuming much of my time. Finished one of the algorithm's project 2 weeks ahead of time, so don't need to do anything in that class. Taking an operating systems course but I already have been reading ahead and taking the udacity course, so I'll be ahead. I'm starting to get jaded a little bit, wondering why I even went back to school. Sometimes when I drive to school, I wonder if what I am doing was worth it. Only time can tell..

Anyways enough about depressing school stuff, I need some project ideas. I was going to teach my self go-lang and create an open source dropbox clone until I discovered there was already one made :|.

Also is it bad that I have an iOS internship this summer, and I haven't touched or done any iOS development since last November? I have no motivation to create any apps right now.

Barrin,

Could you write an android browser that does proper text reflow? Google had the not so brilliant idea of removing reflow logic from chrome around android 4.4 because they wanted to encourage sites to write better mobile friendly sites. The HTC browser is literally the only browser that does proper reflow (i.e you tap on the main text of an article/thread and it resizes it perfectly to your screen size and resolution).

Sorry bud, I don't have an android phone. Since it's open source, couldn't you just fork the old version and install it on your phone?

you don't need a phone to do app development, for the most part Emulators ftw

Dropbox clones are like so 2 years ago - Slack clones are all the rage among cool kids now. On a more serious note, I've always thought an open-source Firebase clone would be cool.

I don't have an account on any of these sites and get ridiculed for it quite often.

Sideproject mvp went feature complete today too cool. Somehow my estimate of alpha in May when I started in November looks solid too. Lots of QA and UI junk to go though.. and the whole learning how to deploy something too. If it catches on at all guess I'll find out the answer to the "how many 1000ms intervals can node handle" question.
