No worries. That's what I'm here for.

Also be aware that the Facebook app is doing very scummy things to make sure it is always running in the back ground and is possibly the worst battery hog on your phone if you have it.

Just an FYI, I found on my 6+ that Waze is pretty battery hungry.

Post entry level jobs? My pm inbox ldo.

Barring that, maybe glassdoor, ycombinator, tech crunch, slashdot (one of the last two has a jobs board, I think - edit - no, I was thinking of stackoverflow!), local universities and community colleges.

Some good feedback, thanks. Seems like it's probably worth it but maybe not in a life changing way.

Honestly I don't read much news, certainly not WSJ-type news. I check HN's and reddit's front page about once or twice a day along with a couple of low moving sub-reddits once'ish a day.

Outside of developing against a native device I mainly wanted a smart phone for e-mail notifications. I'm going to be releasing my 2nd course soon and it would be really useful to be able to answer questions or support related things when I'm not home.

I wonder if that's going to mess with my life though. Usually I don't even think about the internet when I'm out because I know I can't monitor anything until I get home.

it absolutely will. your current system is the way to go, unless you have truly, emergency style reasons to switch to being always on.

I've noticed battery performance degrades over time. I usually begin to notice at about 12-18 months that charging becomes necessary at a nuisance frequency. There's really nothing that can be done for this if your phone doesn't have a removable battery besides getting a new phone. These days phones are powerful enough that you don't really need the latest features. Upgrading at the 3 year mark rather than 18 months makes sense for me, so I always try to buy the model with a removable battery.

Yeah, it's not emergency level. It would also be cool to be able to use IRC while on the run, especially if I'm just sitting on a train for 90min (doesn't happen much, about once a month). I wonder how bad that would kill the battery to idle in about 5-6 IRC channels.

I don't want to post them publicly here, I'll PM you.

Batteries degrade with usage. It's normal.
With today's tech, they typically degrade to about 80ish % of the initial capacity after 600-700 full charge cycles. Full charge cycle meaning from 0 - 100. Going from 50 - 100 would be half a cycle. Overall, degradation accelerates. So, once you notice the battery draining faster due to age, it'll get increasingly worse pretty soon.

There are other options outside replacing the entire phone, too.
You can get the battery replaced. Apple offers this over here at about 120 AUD and does it in a few hours.
Don't know about other brands, but would think at least some of them have something similar on offer.
Then there are those battery extension packs that clip onto a phone. Not necessarily pretty, but will get you through to the next upgrade cycle.

Having constant network I/O operations while traveling through potentially poor signal areas? I would expect that to be quite a drain. Now, if the train offers Wifi on board like they do in some Euro countries, then it should be fine.

Yeah, travelling can kill a phone battery super fast.

The problem is that there's huge pressure to make faster and thinner phones. This is achieved at the cost of battery space because the producers realized that the consumer doesn't care about battery life until after purchase and by then its too late.

I really would prefer a phone with more limited cpu power and a slightly thicker body if it gave me a more reasonable battery life.

Popular mechanics says the best way to keep modern phone batteries healthy is to charge them between 50-75% charge left, the higher the better.

So a phone that can last ages might be nice, but if you run it from full to empty frequently you may quickly find the life dwindling.

Put the watch on it's charger and plug the phone in before going to bed, pretty standard.

Seems like you'd be running up against a lot of competition with 35 years of experience.

Yep. The second Facebook has to admit some kind of declining numbers and the $multi-billion Instagram exit strategy becomes a thing of the past - pretty much every social media startup is going to become devalued over night 10-100x.

Or something like this.

I think overly backwards compatibility updates can be a real drag on new features.
I have a 3rd gen with iOS8 something and it's almost so slow loading big web pages (like 2p2 and chiefsplanet) that it's a paperweight. I'm not planning to buy another one (typed from my MBP on my lap).

It feels like we are getting to the point where having a massive user base is not necessarily "OMGWTFBBQ 1000X valuation!!!" and is now becoming "htf do we pay for all these servers?"

It worked up to a point. But very quickly software started coming out that was ios 6+ only that could have easily run on the 1st gen hardware. And some older software that was working fine suddenly stopped working, like youtube last year.
I complained to photobucket about a nasty bug on their ipad app. They basically said they've stopped supporting it and maybe I'd be happier running the iPhone app on my iPad.

I use Karabiner to map the home and end keys to their SANE behavior (beginning and end of line). Coming from a PC, I used to use it to map Ctrl-V/Ctrl-C to Cmd-V/Cmd-C - but now I have gotten so used to the latter that I have a hard time on a PC keyboard, not vice versa.

I also use and highly recommend TotalFinder. When you need to move files around you can split the screen to show two directories at once, also easily toggling view system files is worth it all by itself, and the visor pops up and down - so I don't have random finder windows scattered all over the place.

I have two external monitors at work, so I use DisplayMaid to re-arrange my windows the way I like when I connect the monitors.

Finder supports tabs now which makes dragging and dropping multiple files around a little easier.
