I don't know anything about the subject, but something like this wifi smart socket outlet would probably work for you. Seems like it'd be the easiest way without having to get too deep into the weeds.

New reports of the 2016 MacBook Pro being delayed until Q4. I may just go Dell XPS 15 now. Looks sweet enough and I'll get it immediately lol. More research to be done...

have 2 raspberry pis at my house, one set up with retropie for old games purposes, the other was a generic, ****-around device with rails, java, apache/mysql/php, etc.

I was running a java app as a server a while back and had port forwarding set up so I could actually use the thing externally, and I got a ton of weird traffic it on. Shut off port forwarding but I couldn't login via vnc internally any more. Said there was too many login attempts and the timeout doubled for each attempt, so maybe it never would have expired and let me log in.

Some time later I noticed our router was no longer showing the device, I couldn't ping it, etc. (reserved IP addy) Tried resetting a few times, because I don't have a monitor I can use on it. Still wasn't coming up.

Reimaged the flash drive just now and it's working just fine. Wonder what the issue was.

Also, pretty interested in setting this up as an amazon echo. :excite:

Doing my first full length 40 minute presentation @ my node meetup group in a couple weeks lets hope I don't screw it up.

Noodle,

Someone pwned your raspberry pi.

Should be good now.

I hope it has a lot of nitty gritty code samples from your app.

Not totally sure what I'm going to do. Try and make it not boring I guess. I'll most show some takeways from building it like not needing babel for server any more and talk about semi isomorphic model and all that. Putting together a deck now.

I have found that an audience of developers get into actual code more than boxes and lines. YMMV

Just be careful with demos. Assume that everything that could possibly go wrong will go wrong, especially internet related.

Definitely record a pre-made screencast that demos what you're trying to demo as a fallback plan to play in your deck if things fail.

Noodle how was the pi for programming? My machine is too crap to virtualize a Linux instance and I'm currently too poor to get the box I want for running windows with a Linux vm or dual boot setup (if Windows will allow me ).

I once fixed a bug that came up in the middle of a demo in front of 30 ppl or so. I was 99% sure I knew how to fix it easily. So I just announced "Don't try this at home kids" and fixed it while everyone watched. That was a rush.

it handled being an apache server ably for what i was doing. I hear nginx is even better.

was pretty slow for some things related to ruby, like compiling took forever during install, but after that it seemed to run okay.

even if it doesn't work for you, it's like $25 out the window at worst.

Got Alexa set up on mine, with a mic plugged in. No way to test as I don't have spare speakers or a button, which is apparently a requirement.

Wonder if there's a way to do a software button or app button

also, now that it's been restarted, i don't seem to be able to ssh or vnc into the device any more (ssh fails due to the host key changing. what are you doing, amazon?!)

Oh wow, that reminds me. I have some demo to go in October or so.

I plan to do a full live coding demo from a blank emacs buffer. Should be fun.

Code demos 1000000x greater than powerpoint. Just try to make some realish world examples. I went to a spark meetup and they showed how to count lines in a file. Sigh

Haha nice.

Almost every meetup I went to had internet difficulties, and some of these were pretty big. Like 200 people and ran by reasonably sized companies.

If the venue's wifi is overloaded or screwed, there's nothing you can do if your demo relies on the internet. Especially if it involves people following along by downloading resources.

One place even went as far as having USB sticks to pass around with the material, but it was a huge hassle and half the meetup was spent just getting set up when with flawless internet it would have been 2 minutes.

Sometimes yes. Some people just hit you with 100 pages of GoLang, expect you to follow along, and see why that one extra comma makes a difference.

Mine will be about 30 loc with routing and templates. Enough to show some basic stuff.

I thought everyone agreed that love coding was the worst thing ever

I've seen some decent well rehearsed live coding ones.

Mine is going to be demo my app and walk through code a bit and quick deck we'll see. 40 minutes seems like a lot.

abandoning raspberry echo attempts. realized i'd rather live without the convenience if it means i don't have to push a button every now and then. i have enough buttons to push in my life.

@suzzer,

if 8am was considered possibly too early, how is 6am supposed to be better?

The 8am meeting was a while back when I was still much more engaged with the old role. I told my new lead I couldn't make it to that one. Said I had a previous appointment. Pretty much true

8am meetings every now and then are a lot more reasonable than 6am meetings. But for me personally 7am works better than 8am - trying to figure out a way to communicate that to my boss.

Going to read your long OP after this, but like... how do people make it in for 6 am meetings? I can barely make it in for the rare 8am meeting I'm added to. Ask your boss what is so urgent that it can't wait until a more 'normal' time of the day. It's hard to imagine what is so important that it must be discussed at the crack of dawn.
