damn, didn't mean to kick the hornets nest.

for the record I wasn't talking about using a bootstrap theme to build his site, I was just talking about calling the bootstrap css for simple table/page like this to make it responsive and not look like it's from 1998.

I just checked. the largest page on my blog comes in at 137.6 kb.

It only loads gAnalytics, Foundation CDN, and some images. It is poorly laid out, mostly mono-chromatic, and looks like utter trash.

Yeah I just thought it was funny.

I agree every site doesn't have to be some cutting edge *new look* and companies get into wasting a lot of money trying to chase the dragon of the latest web trends. For a lot of companies and applications, a nice solid Chevy site that just doesn't look super dated is fine.

However in 5 years that 100% width, parallax style may look really dated.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with bootstrap. Your post just reminded me of that parody site because it made me laugh.

I read the whole thing, I thought it was pretty good.

I don't know about "regulating the hell out of the system" but I do think advertising is a shell game and that a lot of people are or will be losing at it badly soon, if not now. The places that I think will be doing the best in 5-10 years will be the ones who are finding other revenue streams now.

People are already losing at it. Consumers and content creators.

I was pointing out to some site that they shouldn't be storing plain-text passwords on a site that ostensibly deals with real money.

"As this is only a demo site, we don't take it too seriously, but trust me, on our real site, we take security very seriously."

I'm flabbergasted.

So I have an interesting opportunity to move into a real architect role at my company - where I'd be POCing new technologies and pitching them to higher ups etc. Seems like a decent transition from programming and avoid my dreaded fear of being a 53-year-old out of work programmer (in 5 years). Somehow it seems like seasoned architect might garner more respect. Also I love working in and figuring out new technologies.

Thoughts?

mitigate fears, do something you enjoy, garner respect

Yeah, sounds like a bad plan with no upsides

I don't see a lot of downside here assuming this is at worst a lateral transition or hopefully a move up corporately and it's something you'd enjoy. I think you have a long enough history of delivering production-quality software that this doesn't hurt your flexibility either way - would be fairly easy for you to move back into a development role at another company if you want, just gotta spin it as you missing the battlefield.

Yeah I work best with a team under deadline pressure. It's going to be an adjustment to being self-driven. But that's why I have ritalin!

But on the flip side I'll be wfh most of the time and only come into the office when I want/need to.

So I had to re-login to 2p2 for some reason today, and noticed... no SSL.

I checked the code for the login submit, and indeed it does not use https. Instead, they md5 hash the pw before submitting it over http. Which is ofc totally insecure, because the js file that does the hashing can be man in the middled.

Probably a good time for them to double check when the domain expires.

I've brought this up before. I've been told there's not a whole lot they can do (I suppose, within the framework of people they have available to work on it). I think the best they could do is ssl on all the pages (which, uh, seems fine to me). There is maybe some concern about the performance of that, I dunno. But yeah, it's bad.

If it makes you feel any better, years ago I did a very thorough check to see if I could find places to do javascript injection, and I couldn't. That doesn't help if you are personally infected though (although in that case there is not a whole lot that can be done, due to keyloggers and what not)

lol @ "not a whole lot we can do" like they can't spend $500 on a craigslist dude to take a day to implement a lets encrypt ssl cert on a vbulletin site? sure.

My work is supposed to make me an offer for that new job. It's a totally different department with different pay structure, smaller bonus %, not sure about 4% 401k matching or this 3% "pension" that my current department puts money into for me.

Really dreading them coming up with matching salary + bonus but ignoring the other two. I'm pretty excited about taking the job and am sure it would be good for my career. But a pay cut?

Hoping they come up with more. If they drag this out a week I might die.

Mason said if Obama's 3.9% tax increase on income over $400k went through he would have to fire people. So thanks, Obama.

Don't forget that you can negotiate with them - even though you are already employed. Actually really you can negotiate with your employer at any time for any reason but basically no one ever does for some reason.

I'm basically an unpaid intern so I dunno anything. They're not gonna let me get my paws on it, there are lots of things I'd like to try to do.
