Yep, I tried to go for a 30 minute walk every day when I was playing poker. Also got a trainer twice a week to force me to keep my sleep schedule normal.

At the beginning of the year, I was doing some testing of MalwareByte's Anti-Exploit product with Metasploit. I had found a payload that succeeded, but unfortunately didn't produce a shell. I was using the AdobeLibTiff exploit, and a message box payload, which simply displays a message box on the desktop and is used to display errors and things like that. Nothing really sexy, but it was a successful execution of an exploit and payload.

I just checked the newest version of MBAE I have, and in the advanced settings it has an option to block message box payloads! So I think I helped them improve it, even if only a little bit!

Well that's rubbish. I just tested the newest version and the exploit and payload are still working on Adobe Reader 9.3.0

What's a decent Android tablet in the 200-400$ range? Looking to get one for my mom's birthday. She'll basically use it for nothing, not a heavy computer user at all. Youtube videos in the kitchen is something she mentioned + she'll surf a bit and buy stuff online. I don't even know what to look for exactly tbh. She will only need WLAN as she doesn't even own a cell phone except for a work one+can't see her taking the tablet anywhere unless it's on vacation or something.

I studied jazz and criminal justice in college. Never took a single college math or business course. Never finished college. A few years later I started as a data entry contractor for one of the largest telecom companies in the world. 7 years later, I was an employee, in management, on salary, with the job title Senior Financial Analyst. How did I do this? I swear, all I did, was one day, I spent about an hour Googling how to do pivot tables and Vlookups and I became the ‘Excel expert’ in my office.”

I purchased an iPad for my mother, compared to an android tablet like a year ago.
Reason is that the iPad is less likely to get messed up and never has yet...

Android security has been below par and google play store is a disaster.

A person like my mother, can just live with her iPhone but I would prefer something bigger for her eyes and which is why I got the biggest iPad at the time.

I debated on getting an Android Nexus 7 tablet, could have saved a hundred or two but the screen would have been smaller. Would have had to set it up pre configured with telling don't do 'x' which would have happened anyways to later compromise the device, idk it depends on the person.

The nexus 7 tablet is really nice for how inexpensive it is and I enjoyed using it.
Maybe its too small, idk.

Do people accept every linkedin request they get?

I generally ignore anybody that isn't:

1. Somebody I know directly or indirectly because they're active in some community I follow.
2. Somebody that writes me a personal message explaining why they want to connect with me.

But if its just somebody that I've interviewed or that found me while searching through LinkedIn that can't be bothered to write anything personal - why are we connections?

I accept 95%, basically draw the line on people who are clearly fake accounts.

I dont know if they show you anymore but at last count I was at ~2.5k connections. ~700 of them are from an open networking group that accepted 100% of connections so now when I look at companies I can usually see the entire profiles of people since I typically have at least one 1st or 2nd degree connection there.

I think the first thing to ask yourself is what you are using LinkedIn for. "Just someone you interviewed" could be very helpful to see updates for, and maybe even interview them again if they go get more relevant experience.

I don't really use LinkedIn for anything. I probably won't be job hunting for a few years and most of the places I'd want to apply I would probably have a real life connection to that I could use.

Even in terms of recruiting I don't find it useful. I probably phone screen/interview 80-100 people a year so I can't keep track of everyone that I interviewed.

So I guess I mostly use as a way for to see what people I know are doing professionally. Mostly for personal interest.

Ah that seems like a good reason enough to be a Linkedin whore

I though LinkedIn was for checking out hot marketers and spamming all of your gmail "contacts."

Shut mine down a long while ago.

What do you guys use it for?

I get it in networking heavy jobs (sales, fundraising, recruiting, etc.) but I just don't see it as that useful to me.

Yea I'm sales so that speaks for itself.

I once sent a LinkedIn invite to one of our client references who I had sent prospects to 2-3 times (and now have 10+ times) and he looked at my profile and didn't accept. I get that he was the company's client before I started, but I felt dissed that he looked at me and declined and my bosses had just gone to lunch with him. Then I realized the VC he worked (he was a ~vp/partner) had been a big investor in LinkedIn so I figured he just being a LOL VC and didn't know how to use it.

I probably do that to some people too. It's often that I can't remember who the person is but the name sounds familiar or that I click a wrong button.

I have it for the sake of having it. I don't really actively use it, but I keep it updated. Recruiter gender ratio has been like: 80% girls and 20% guys. In Google and Spotify's case, it was both guys.

Most of my contacts come through either GitHub or my personal site.

I've been getting back at studying programming, trying to get ready for next year when it becomes a major focus in my studies. It's really hard to try to stay focused on programming and mathematics when I have to put so much focus into networking, and management and policy crap.

I've been going back through codecademy's python modules, and I think I just figured out that drawing a flow chart of the code they have written, and then drawing a flowchart of what I'm supposed to do helps a lot. I think being able to visualize things in an abstract way is pretty beneficial. I may have asked here before, but what do the seasoned programmers here think of flowcharts? Do you make use of them? Do they help you come up with algorithms and solutions?

Cheers!

I find writing out my thoughts can be pretty useful when I'm facing a particularly complex problem.

Sometimes that's just a list of things I'll need to do and sometimes its a diagram of some sort. I think knowing different ways to represent your thoughts is useful (flowchart, sequence diagram, dependency graph, whatever...) since they all do different things well.

That being said, the thing to remember is that its just a tool. And in most cases it works perfectly well without needing to worry about details like should something be a triangle, circle, or square.

I don't have a LinkedIn account or an account for any of these career/networking sites. If someone wants me to work for them they have to find me by other means.

Re: charts...I usually use my own spontaneous notation but grabbing a piece of paper before/during writing code is very helpful for me.

Linkedin isn't bad, if you use an email address that is specifically for your Linkedin account.

I basically use it as my online resume, with my past work experience listed and ignore everything else that comes along with the account.

I've never benefited from having the account, other than get requests to go work for 'x' or 'y' which i've declined.

I think its an unspoken requirement to have one, if you want to work for a big company because everyone adds each other and is sort of a social thing to see where people are going in their work life as years go by.

I'm sure you can get away with not having an account but I like a separator of contacts service other than Facebook.

I don't mind the LinkedIn website, but also use a junker of an email address on there. I ditched the app PDQ, however, when despite my options selection to the contrary, it hijacked the contacts on my phone .

I use them to help me understand what I'm looking at. It helps a lot to figure out what is happening when you have piles and piles of stuff, and it helps to see where the mistakes and redundancies are.

But, as I learned today, sometimes a chart backfires in spectacular fashion.

The other unspoken half is no one gives a **** what you are doing 3 months after you left your job anymore than you would care about their whereabouts.

I don't use flowcharts but am not negatively disposed to using them at all. In my mind the thing that you won't be exposed to much at school is "big picture" type problems where there is a lot of requirements to satisfy and you will need to come up with a solution that balances a lot of things. Flowcharts fit in rectifying small pieces of a solution to a such a problem. In my view a good developer will spend a lot of time on the quality of their code. So developing a good sense of what high quality code consists of will be your challenge when you start working in the "real world."

I have been given an excel file of around 6000 rows, I am needing to write a script to update an oracle table from it, the query is pretty simple:

="update table set phone_number = "&B2&" where entityid = "&D2&";"

My question is about the script itself, what is the standard practice for writing a script from a file this size? am i expected to just write a .sql file with 6000 update statements? or is it better to import into oracle by converting the file into a .csv or some other method?
** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD ** Quote

It depends on a lot of other factors, but if a file with 6000 updates works - I'd just do that. I imagine it'll be fine for the majority of cases.

If this is a really important database serving in a production capacity (which most are) you should check with someone that understands how your database is being used to figure out the impact of your 6000 update statements.
